If you’re an obsessed fashion follower like we are, you probably saw a headline or two about the latest controversy surrounding Fashion Nova. Apparently, one of the biggest clothing retailers in the world is under scrutiny for selling a swimsuit that could be cancerous. Yeah, you read that correctly. Cancerous. If your jaw has dropped, don’t worry. We had to pick our’s up off the floor.
What’s With the Cancerous Fashion Nova Swimsuit?
So basically every self-respecting fashion guru is familiar with the Fashion Nova brand, right? They quickly became one of the biggest fashion brands in the industry after Kylie Jenner touted her love for their form-fitted clothes and great prices. Even celebs like Cardi B, Amber Rose, and Nicki Minaj have been spotted countless times sporting Fashion Nova clothing. It wasn’t long before social media influencers jumped on the bandwagon and started posting countless photos in the brand’s hottest pieces. So why is the successful company suddenly embroiled in a scandal?
This week, Twitter user and Fashion Nova fan @aziaani_ took to the internet to share something alarming she found in her newest Fashion Nova swimsuit. It was a tag warning the consumer that the swimsuit could expose them to carcinogens. Uhm…what?! We know that certain skincare chemicals can be carcinogens. We know that sleeping too close to your cell phone can be cancerous. But your adorable new swimsuit? Surely that can’t give you cancer, right? …right?!
As the label on the swimsuit reads, the material that the swimsuit is made from contains “Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, lead and cadmium, which are known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, and other reproductive harm.” Aside from cancer and birth defects, these chemicals can cause liver damage, aging skin and skin damage, and neurological issues. Honestly, that sounds pretty awful. Your clothing shouldn’t contain anything that could cause harm to your health in any way. Understandably, fans of the brand took to Twitter to express their concern over the matter. After all, no one wants to wear something that could give them cancer. That seems like a pretty universal feeling.
It turns out, this same warning about health hazards is on many other Fashion Nova items and it is even featured on the brand’s website. This is thanks to California’s Proposition 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. This ruling requires all businesses in the state of California to inform customers of any potential exposure to chemicals that may cause cancer, birth defects, or other health issues. Fashion Nova isn’t alone when it comes to slapping this label on their products. Dozens of other companies in California have had to do the same, including coffee chains and furniture stores. Ugh. Is anywhere safe?!
What Can Consumers Do About This?
If you’re feeling angry that your clothing could put your health at risk, there are a few things you can do to make a difference. The easiest option is to stop buying clothing from that particular company. However, Fashion Nova clothes are incredible. They really are! The selection, the fit, the price. We honestly love this brand! We don’t really want to give up on them and we understand why other consumers wouldn’t want to either. So what are the other options?
The best option is to contact the company with your sincere concerns. Explain how much you love the products but you don’t want to put your health at risk by wearing them. When enough consumers take action in this way, brands often oblige the consumer and begin making products that are safe to wear. There’s no guarantees, but it’s worth a try. Like we said, we’re not ready to give up on Fashion Nova!
