Style Rebel: 10 Fashion Rules That Were Made To Be Broken

Throughout life you’ve probably heard many tips and tricks about fashion. Along with the words or wisdom, you’ve probably been force-fed some truly terrible “fashion rules”. While many people are very concerned with obeying these unwritten laws of fashion, we want you to know that these rules were made to be broken. Fashion is about freedom and creativity, so dress as freely as you want! We’re going over ten of the most ridiculous fashion rules that you need to forget:

1. Don’t wear white after Labor Day.

This is one of the oldest fashion rules. You’ve probably heard it a million times. We want you to know: it’s meaningless. You can wear white after Labor Day. You can wear white whenever you want. Why? Because white looks good all year round. Nothing changes after the month of September that makes white suddenly a fashion faux paus.

2. Don’t let your bra straps show.

Women wear bras. This is a fact, and there is nothing wrong with wearing a bra. You don’t need to dress strategically so that your bra straps are hidden away under your clothing. If you want to wear a racerback top that reveals your bra straps, that’s fine. Hey, maybe your bra is really cute and adds to the overall outfit!

Fashion Rules

3. Tall women should avoid heels.

For all the lovely statuesque ladies out there, go ahead and wear those heels. This rule was established so that tall women would not look larger than their male counterparts. There’s nothing wrong with being taller than a guy. Some women are tall. Some men are short. You don’t need to negotiate your fashion choices around the height of yourself or others.

4. You need to wear tights or pantyhose with dresses and skirts.

…no. You just don’t need to do this. It’s not the 1950’s anymore. It’s okay if we see your legs.

Fashion Rules

5. Don’t wear silver and gold jewelry at the same time.

Many people think that mixing different metals is a major fashion mistake. We think otherwise. Wear whatever jewelry you want. In fact, wear a mixture of silver and gold rings all on the same hand. Layer some gold and silver bangles. Blind the naysayers with all that bling!

6. If you want quality clothing, you should spend a fortune.

Media and advertisements may have led you to believe that quality clothing costs a fortune. While a lot of nice clothing is expensive, you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to look good. There are endless retailers who offer high-quality clothing at affordable prices. Some of it looks like it came straight off the runway!

Fashion Rules

7. Dress for your body type.

At some point you may have been told that, “you don’t have the body for that.” We want you to know that a body is a body. There is no certain body type assigned to a selection of clothing. You don’t need to be a Size 0 to wear a crop top or leggings. You don’t need to be built larger to wear baggy clothes. Wear whatever you are comfortable in.

8. Don’t mix prints.

This is one of the fashion rules that doesn’t need to be followed strictly, but you may want to take it into consideration. It is totally okay to mix different prints in an outfit. However, we do recommend keeping it to a minimum of two to three different prints. Anything more than that is just going to scramble people’s brains when they encounter you.

Fashion Rules

9. Keep accessories to a minimum.

Some people say that you need to strategize your accessories. Don’t wear too much jewelry. Don’t wear jewelry with a handbag and hair accessories. This is all ridiculous. Go ahead and wear whatever accessories you want. There is no such thing as too many accessories. Accessories are made to compliment an outfit, so go ahead and pile them on.

10. Dress appropriately for your age.

This is truly one of the most ridiculous fashion rules. Fashion has no expiration date. Don’t think that once you hit a certain age, you need to completely revise your wardrobe. While there are certain clothing items that make you look more mature and certain things that make you look younger, you are free to wear anything at any age.
