Real Life Fashion Police: Mankini confiscated in UK town

We can probably all agree that the gentlemen pictured above are committing a crime of fashion, no?

Are they committing an actual crime, though? Well, police in Newquay, Cornwall, would presumably think so: they’ve already confiscated one such mankini, after a ban was introduced on offensive clothing and possessions, as part of a bit to cut down on “lewd and loutish behaviour” in the seaside town. So, no more Borat lookalikes in Newquay then. They can put up a sign saying “Welcome to Newquay: no eyeball bleach required!”

Were the police right to take someone’s Mankini away from them, though? We’d say that yes, they probably were. Although our fashion policing on this site is strictly for entertainment purposes, and we don’t actually believe in banning items that are only subjectively ugly (i.e. As nice as it would be to see a complete ban on Crocs, that wouldn’t really be fair, would it?), we do think there are some things that just don’t need to be seen in a public street, and one of those things is a naked behind. If you’re on a nudist beach, fine, get your butt out with pride. In the street, though? Well, it IS pretty funny (the guys pictured above, for instance, were happily posing for photographs, and were obviously wearing the manikinis as a joke or a bet.) but it’s also one of those things that, once seen, can’t be un-seen.

And now YOU can’t un-see it either, can you? Sorry about that.

What do you think about confiscating clothes? Should Borat-style mankinis be banned in public places?

I don’t think they should. At least not as long as women may prance about unhindered in thong/g-string bikinis.
I’m all for banning both, if that is the only way to teach people some manners. But as long as such a rule only affects one gender, they won’t get my vote!

I am mostly against banning clothing items, I do think people should wear whatever they want BUT they should also know where to wear them. I recently had a dilemma, I was wondering if I’m just too prudish. I went to a festival in London and I was shocked – I say SHOCKED- at the ammount of buttocks and underwear I saw. Back home, Mexico, we like to cover up a bit more (this has mostly to do with the fact that men like to yell “compliments” when they see a little bit of flesh), so seeing this was a bit odd. When I was in the UK last winter I remember lots of girls walking around with no coats and only tiny dresses when I was covered with about a million layers. Anyway, I love the fact that girls are comfortable enough to go about wearing tiny garments and that men don’t look at them drooling and yelling awful things, but I certainly don’t want to see their underwear nor their bums (believe me I saw way more than I expected). Hence my dilemma, where does freedom of expression end and where does decency begin?

If you can see their butt or thong, over 90% of their boobs, and if there is a danger of seeing ladybits, it is indecent. But I’m a giant prude as well, and have a really broad definition of “trashy”.

This is an aside of course, but is there an epidemic of buttpox going on? All three rears look like they’ve got some sort of rash. Shame, really, #2 has quite a nice bottom!

Regarding the issue, I get why they’d ban them… I just feel odd about banning them if they’re on a beach where thongs are allowed. Because that’s more or less what it is, a thong bathing suit that’s been given an atomic wedgie, if you please.

The idea of too much naked is strange. women can’t show their nipples but men can. In some places I’ve visited the natives wear underwear under the swimsuits which is actually more obscene to me since it’s peaking out. some places it matters if you’re “pleasing” to look at. I say let them wear what they want as long as it’s more than that and everyone covers their nipples unless they have a six pack.

Sadly, I just want everyone to get on my page which is stupid of me.
