Is the skinny jeans trend finally over?

So, Liz Jones, fashion writer for The Daily Mail, has decreed today that skinny jeans are officially "over". I beg to differ. It’s a prediction that will no doubt come back to bite me firmly on the bum this time next year, when everyone’s back in bootcuts, but I’m going to stick my neck out here and say I think skinny jeans are here to stay. They may not always be as popular as they have been over the past couple of years, but I think they’ve moved into "fashion classic" territory, and while they’re definitely not for everyone, for those who love them, the skinny jean will always be around.

I hope so, anyway, and I say this is as someone who was firmly against this trend back when it started. I couldn’t imagine ever wanting to squeeze myself into a pair of skinnies, and I couldn’t really see why anyone would. Oh, how things change. Last weekend I slipped on an old pair of bootcuts – and hated them. After weeks of wearing skinnies, my trusty old Earls looked old fashioned and not particularly flattering. It was then that I knew I’d become a skinny jeans fan, and there would be no going back.

That’s not to say I’ll never wear bootcuts again, or that it’s going to be all-skinny, all the time, here at Fashion Police towers. Different styles of jeans work with different looks, and bootcuts will always have a place in my heart – as will those straight-cuts I was getting all worked up about last month. No, I don’t want to see wider legged jeans die out altogether – but I would like to keep on wearing my skinnies for as long as I can still buy them. Choice  is always a good thing, no?

So, what do you think? Are skinny jeans well and truly dead, as The Daily Mail seems to think, or will you be keeping on wearing them with pride?
