How to organize your closet

How to Organize Your Closet Now that spring has officially sprung, chances are some of you are either preparing to spring-clean your closet, or are getting your spring clothes out of storage, ready to be worn. Even if you haven’t been bitten by the spring-cleaning bug, we recommend taking a good, long look at your closet at least a couple of times per year, to clear out the items that aren’t earning their keep, and take stock of what you have, and what you need. A well-organized closet is one failsafe way to make sure you always have something to wear, so here are some quick, basic tips on how to organize your closet, and make the most of your…

Dress of the Day | ASOS SALON Organza Floral Prom Dress

ASOS SALON Organza Floral Prom Dress, £85 We make no apology for featuring ASOS as our Dress of the Day so soon after the last time: yet again, the brand has released a fantastic summer collection, which seems designed to appeal to those of us who love retro-inspired fashion, midi dresses and, of course, jacquard fabrics. ASOS released quite a few floral jacquard dresses last year, and it’s possible we ended up buying them all. Whoops. This season, they’ve done it again: whether WE “do it again” remains to be seen, but we think there’s a pretty good chance – especially if this dress happens to go on sale at any point. We can’t afford it, and we’ve nowhere to wear…

The Fashion Police and the eBay Influencer Network

Because we’ve been policing the world of fashion for a long time now, there inevitably come times when new readers stumble across a post in our archive, and want to know where they can find the item featured – which, of course, has long-since sold out. We always give the same answer to the “where can I find this?” questions, and it can be summed up in one word: eBay, dude. OK, that was two words. You know what we mean. We’ve been recommending eBay to fashion hunters for years, so today we’re happy to announce that we’ve teamed up with the UK auction site, to become part of the eBay Influencer Network. “What’s that, Fashion Police?” we hear you…

Five Fashion Bloggers Wear… Gap Sexy Boyfriend Jeans

Five Fashion Bloggers wear Gap Sexy Boyfriend Jeans Love ’em or loathe ’em, boyfriend jeans are here to stay – for a little while at least. In fact, a quick flick through our favourite fashion blogs is enough to tell us boyfriend jeans are more popular than ever at the moment, and are starting to eclipse even the ubiquitous skinnies, so we decided it was high time to take a look at how people are actually wearing them. And by “people”, we mean “fashion bloggers” obviously. So, how are fashion bloggers wearing the loose-fitting style? For the purposes of this experiment, we’ve chosen to focus on Gap’s 1969 Sexy Boyfriend Jeans, currently on sale for $30: As well as the…

Dress of the Day | Definitions Check Blosson Print Dress

Definitions Check Blossom Print Dress, £59 This dress is so pretty that when we first came across it we assumed it must be too expensive to even think about buying. As it turns out, however, it’s a pretty reasonably £59 from Very, who we’ve now made a mental note to check out more often. We really like the two-tone blossom print on this dress: the shades of pink, lilac and yellow all work together really well, while the fitted bodice and flirty skirt will make it the kind of thing you could dress up with heels for an evening out, or wear with a casual jacket and sandals on a spring day. As for the rest of the summer collection…

Looks We Love | Colourful pastel coats

The Elgin Avenue wears ASOS’s pink cocoon coat [available here We know those of you in the Northern Hemisphere are probably getting ready to hang up your winter coats by now (we know we are), but as the weather has yet to catch up with our style sensibilities, we’ll probably have to put up with them for a couple more weeks yet. As it happens, though, this winter’s coats were more of a pleasure to “put up with” than usual. We loved the trend for pastel outerwear in all the colours of the rainbow, and have high hopes that it sticks around until NEXT winter, because after enjoying all of those candy-coloured coats, we’re even more reluctant than usual to…

Dress(es) of the Day | ASOS Skater dress with floral embroidery

ASOS skater dress, £75 It’s a little bit shorter (OK, make that a BIG bit shorter… ) than the dresses we normally feature in this slot, but for those of you who like your hems mini-length, we think this is a cute little dress for summer. From the slightly higher-priced ASOS Collection line, the intricate embroidery on the hem and bodice help account for the more-expensive-than-we’d-expect-from-ASOS price tag, but at £75 it’s not extortionate either. The beautiful, cobalt blue colour, meanwhile, is really striking, and provides a nice backdrop for the different colours in the embroidered sections. If this is just a little too short for you, however, here’s a longer option, in a similar style: ASOS Premium Midi Skater…

Five Fashion Bloggers wear Topshop’s gingham print ‘Joni’ jeans

Topshop’s gingham print ‘Joni’ jeans are the kind of thing we probably wouldn’t have given a second glance… until we saw them on our Five Fashion Bloggers: Topshop gingham-print ‘Joni’ jeans, £38 If you’re a Topshop fan, you’re probably already familiar with the ‘Joni’ jeans, if not in this particular print, then in one of the many other colours they’ve been released in. A fashion blogger favourite, they’re a super high-waisted, skin-tight style which we’d probably have found a little bit intimidating if we’d come across them in-store, to be perfectly honest. The words “skin-tight” and “high-waist” are enough to make many of us break out into a cold sweat, so we’re particularly glad that our five featured fashion bloggers…

Looks We Love | Red jeans, camel coat

There’s nothing more classic than a camel coat… except perhaps a camel coat worn with the perfect pair of bright red jeans: Image: Bittersweet Colours Brooklyn Blonde Stylissim Who says cold-weather looks have to be dull, dark and dreary? In the outfits above, red jeans bring a welcome splash of colour to a winter’s day, while the camel provides a nice contrast: the colour is every bit as versatile as black, but can be a little less draining on the complexion, which is always a good thing. This is the kind of colour combination that never goes out of fashion, and although winter is almost over for this year (or, at least, we hope so…), it’s one that will continue…

Five Fashion Bloggers, One Full Skirt

Here at TheFashionPolice.net, we love fashion bloggers. Love ’em. Far more interesting to us than seeing what stylists have put on celebrities, or what designers have put on models, is seeing what women like us have put on themselves, and that’s why personal style blogs are so fascinating to us. Without the unlimited budgets of the aforementioned celebrities, fashion bloggers (or many of them, anyway) offer a much more realistic source of inspiration when it comes to helping us decide what to wear and buy. We love seeing what clothes look like “in real life”, and on a variety of different people, and we also love seeing the myriad different ways in which different women will choose to style the…

Dress of the Day | Oasis swallow-print skater dress (in two lengths!)

Oasis swallow-print skater dress, £48 Bird-print dresses never seem to go out of style – and nor do skater dresses, for that matter. This swallow-print dress from Oasis, however, managed to grab our attention today for two reasons: 1. The colour. For some reason, bird print dresses generally tend to come in either navy or black, so this bottle green makes a nice change. 2. The fact that it comes in two different lengths. Now, granted, there’s not a HUGE amount of difference between the lengths of the two dresses shown above. Both of them hit a good few inches above the knee, so it’s not like Oasis have provided us with the choice between mini and midi… or even…

DOTD | Boden ‘Nancy’ dress in blue Riviera print

Boden Nancy dress,£89 We realise Boden’s ‘Nancy’ dress isn’t exactly appropriate for the current climate here in the frozen north, but that’s OK: this dress is part of the Boden summer preview, and although you CAN pre-order it now (And if you like it, you probably should, because we don’t see this one sticking around for long…), it’ll be at least eight weeks before you’ll actually own it. Will it be warm enough to wear it by then? Well, probably not, to be completely honest. But it’ll be warm enough ONE day, and that’s good enough for us. The Boden ‘Nancy’ dress comes in three different prints, but this ‘Riviera’ version is the one everyone’s been talking about. Featuring a…

River Island Spring/Summer 2014 preview

River Island Spring/Summer 2014 Continuing our spring forward (sorry) to SS 2014 fashion, here’s a quick look at some of the items you can expect to see from River Island next season. RI impressed us this winter, with some fantastic skirts, knits and winter coats. This summer collection is a bit of a mixed bag: there are some migraine-inducing patterns in the form of garishly printed pants and tops, and we’re dismayed to see THAT Zara skort reborn at River Island. (To be fair, ever since Zara unleashed that skort upon us, lots of other brands have copied it, so River Island aren’t the only guilty party in this respect…) On the other hand, there are some pretty skirts and…

DOTD | Collectif ‘Dorothy’ Tulle Floral Swing Dress

Dorothy Tulle Floral Swing Dress, £150 Well, isn’t this just an absolute dream of a dress? At £150, it’s just a little bit pricier than we’re used to paying for Collectif, but if you visit the site and zoom in on the fabric, you’ll see why: layers of delicate tulle embroidered with pretty little roses, finish off a classic, 50s-style dress, complete with pleated, bardot neckline. This is the kind of dress that would be perfect for a summer wedding, and might even work if you’re one of the bridesmaid’s – or even the bride herself, come to think of it. This has a bit of a “Grace Kelly” vibe to it, and is designed to appeal to lovers of…

DOTD | Coast mesh ‘Alberta’ dress

Coast ‘Alberta’ dress, £135 We have so much love for Coast’s current collection that we could have picked any number of dresses as our Dress of the Day. No, seriously. We’ve picked this ‘Alberta’ dress for a few reasons. One is simply that we love mint green/aqua, and we don’t care who knows it. The other, however, is that is an example of the mesh (or any other sheer fabric) used for good rather than evil in the making of an item of clothing. Remember those Topshop “sweaters” we arrested last week? That’s an example of sheer fabric that’s turned to the Dark Side. This dress, however? This uses layers of sheer mesh to create a diaphanous, glamorous feel, and…

DOTD | F&F Oval Spot Print Prom Dress

F&F Oval Spot Print Prom Dress, £35 Over the past few weeks, we’ve become big fans of Tesco’s F&F range. The prices are low – as you’d probably expect from a supermarket brand – but the quality is high: or, at least, it has been in our experience. We wouldn’t, for instance, have guessed that this particular dress came from the same supermarket we buy our cornflakes and bottles of Pinot Grigio from. It has a wonderful, retro feel to it, and the exaggerated skirt, with its monochrome spot print, has much more of a “wow” factor than we’d normally expect from something that’ll set you back just £35. This is a limited edition piece, and it’s also an online…

Five Under Fifty | New Look Edition

New Look is one of the few stores out there where it’s possible to get an entire outfit for £50 or less, so when they asked us to take a look and see which of their products would pass the Fashion Police test, we decided to add an extra challenge, and put together three outfits, all available for £50 or under. Here are some of the items on our ‘Wanted!’ file, grouped together into three classic outfits: Skirt | Top | Shoes | Clutch  Red bottom + stripe top is a tried and tested Fashion Police formula for a classic, effortless look that will take you almost anywhere. Add the kind of simple black pumps that work with everything, plus…

Dress of the Day | Forever Unique Structured Dress with Bow

Forever Unique Structured Dress With Bow, £250 It’s been a while since our last Dress of the Day post, which means we should probably think about re-naming it “Dress of the Every-Few-Months” or “Dress of the Whenever-We-Feel-Like-It-Really”. That doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, though, so, in a bid to get back into our regular posting schedule, we bring you this Forever Unique pencil dress, even although we’re pretty sure some of you will hate it. It’s the peplum that’s the issue, isn’t it? It’s just a little bit extravagant – as is the bow, for that matter – which means it definitely won’t be to everyone’s taste. That’s OK, though: nothing actually IS to everyone’s taste, which…

Marks & Spencer Spring 2014 Lookbook

All items: M&S After the success of their Winter 2013 collection – including THAT pink coat – we thought we’d take a quick look at the Marks & Spencer Spring 2014 Lookbook, to see if they’ll be able to live up to last season’s promise. And do they? Well, we don’t see any stand out, OMGMUSTHAVE items in this selection, although, once again, the styling is certainly more fashion-forward than we’d come to expect from M&S: there are even a few sheer stripe skirts and leather t-shirts in there, as the brand continues to attempt to shrug off the frumpy image it once had, and convince us all that it truly is a force to be reckoned with. Have they…
