Crime of Fashion: Oli’s cut out cleavage dress

Now, what did this poor dress do to the designers at Oli, we wonder, that they felt the need to do this to it? It’s a true crime of fashion: an otherwise inoffensive, pretty party dress, ruined by some designer’s need to make it "sexy" – and by "sexy" read "slash great big crescents in the bodice so that your boobs hang out of them".  I mean, if you’re going to wear a dress like this, which does everything in its power to draw attention to your assets, then you may as well just draw a huge arrow on your chest with the words "LOOK! BOOBS!" underneath it. Because, let’s face it, that’s exactly what this dress is saying…

Dress of the Day: Silver sequin dress from Debenhams

Debenhams are describing this dress as "ivory", but it looks a lot like silver to us . Thoughts? Whatever you want to call the colour, this would be a great party season dress – yes, we know there are a kazillion sequined dresses around at the moment, but the simple style of this one makes it stand out. Wear with black tights and high, high heels – or with anything else you like, really. Buy: Silver sequined dress,£80.

Style Stealer: Oli’s version of Victoria Beckham’s pink Roland Mouret ‘Moon’ Dress

The colour is different and the fabric isn’t quite the same, but this pink pleat neck dress from Oli is unmistakably "inspired" by Roland Mouret’s "Moon" dress, as seen on Victoria Beckham. Oli are far from the only ones to be making copies of this dress – Topshop did one and Tesco have one too, apparently, so this one simply adds to the collection of Moon-like dresses available. It’s £60 – a damn sight less than Mrs Beckham paid…. Victoria Beckham’s pink ‘Moon’ dress by Roland Mouret So, I understand Victoria Beckham’s TV documentary didn’t go down too well in the States. That’s too bad. Love her or hate her, though, you surely must concede that this dress is to…

80s fashion at Miss Selfridge – gold prom dress and ra-ra skirt!

Oh, those 1980s! Sometimes it feels like they never went away, especially now, when so many of the high street fashion stores seem hellbent on bringing them back to us. Miss Selfridge’s Vintage Collection is where you’ll find these little beauties: a gold and black lace prom dress and the classic 80s polka dot ra ra skirt. The dress in particular features that oh-so-eighties V-shaped waistline, which is a particular bugbear of ours (Topshop’s Star Dress has one too), but we’re guessing you might just be able to get away with this, with the right hair and shoes (i.e no back-combing and no pointy 80s stilettos…). Dress of the Day: St. Bart’s Dress by Karen Zambos Vintage Couture

The name of this dress alone should be a clue that it’s a resort collection piece, not one of the clutch of Christmas party dresses all of the fashion retailers have been rolling out this month. I’m already getting bored of all the sequins and silk, though, and starting to think longingly of winter breaks in St. Barts with hot sun, blue skies and the opportunity to wear lots of pretty sun dresses, like this one by Karen Zambos Vintage Couture, which is $360 at ShopBop. Just what the doctor ordered to brighten up a cold, dark Tuesday in November… More Dresses of the Day More Crimes of Fashion More Celebrity Fashion

Style on Trial: Topshop’s Silk Star Print Dress

Readers, meet Topshop’s star print dress. It’s £65, and is apparently the dress du jour over at the Shop that is Top – so much so that it sold out almost as soon as the first batch was put on sale, and they’re now urging everyone who wants one to hurry and snap one up quick now that some new stock has gone online today. It’s the pansy print dress all over again, isn’t it? Our question is: WHY? I mean, is anyone else seeing a slightly 80s-esque dress here, with the kind of pointy, gathered waist that you used to get on bridesmaid’s gowns, circa 1982? No? Just us then. The Topshop Star Print Dress is On Trial, folks….

Style Stealer: Hilary Swank’s little black dress at the Time for Peace Awards

Hilary Swank was showing off her new short crop this weekend (she’s donated her hair to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths, to help women coping with cancer), and was also showing off this classic little black dress with jewelled neckline. Oli’s black satin dress doesn’t have the bow at the waist that Hilary’s does, but that’s easily fixed with a belt or a length of ribbon. It’l cost you £59 to steal Hilary’s style. Her figure and face we can’t really help you with, unfortunately…

Dress of the Day: Zac Posen’s pale green carpi cap sleeve dress

I’m pretty sure Zac Posen has made this dress just to taunt me. He has somehow managed to look into my dress-obsessed heart, and has used everything he found there to create the dress of my dreams: green chiffon, silver metallic thread, defined waist, pretty little cap sleeves, flower embellishments – the lot. The swine. The good news is that this dress is currently on sale at Net-a-Porter. The bad news? Well, "on sale" in this case still means £670, unfortunately…

Dress of the Day: Purple bandeau prom dress from Dorothy Perkins

Yes, it’s another purple bandeau dress. Sorry. It’s getting kind of hard to avoid them at the moment, though, given that purple has been designated as “the” colour of the season by the fashion powers that be. This puffball prom dress by Dorothy Perkins is a rather nice use of the colour, and I’m loving the nipped-in waist and jewel detail on the bodice. I’m starting to get images of Christmas parties crammed to the rafters with girls in purple strapless dress, though, so if it’s individuality you’re looking for, maybe give this a miss and pick out some other fabulous colour instead.

Dress of the Day: Black and gold polka dot ‘Season’ dress by French Connection

I’m in two minds about this dress. On the one hand, I love me some bows and some polka dots, and this dress delivers on both counts – so far, so good. On the other hand, there’s something a little cartoon-ish about it, and no matter how hard I try, I can’t quite stop the image of Minnie Mouse coming into my head every time I look at it. That said, it makes a nice change from all of the black prom-style dresses that are around right now, and it’ll cetainly get you noticed. Just try to resist the impulse to wear it with big yellow shoes, a la Minnie, and you’ll be good. Buy : French Connection, £95.

A dress for possibly-pregnant J.Lo. Everyone else stay well clear…

Has J.Lo actually admitted she’s pregnant yet? I forget: she’s been playing "I’m totally not going to admit I’m pregnant, but please keep taking pictures of me in my massive smock dresses" for so long now that I’m finding it harder and harder to care.  Either way, though, I think she might like this dress from Laundry by Design. I mean, I’d be seriously surprised if anyone else liked it, but it is very "J.Lo" right now, isn’t it? Hell, you could probably fit about six babies under that billowing fabric -and actually, come to think of it, you could get a couple up each sleeve, too. Even a belt wouldn’t help you here, because there’s so much fabric you’d…

One dress, several skintight ways to wear…

If body-con clothing’s your thing this season, then American Apparel is your store, because you see these girls? These slightly pissed-off looking girls in the super-tight dresses? These girls are all wearing the same dress – albeit in different colours. Yes, this is American Apparel’s amazing cotton spandex jersey bandau pencil dress (catchy name, AA!), and it can be worn in so many different ways that I can’t even bring myself to write them all down. True, all of the ways you can wear this dress involve looking like you’re wearing a second-skin, so this is probably not one for the office Christmas party, your best friend’s wedding or, indeed, anywhere else that requires you to look vaguely classy. It’s…

Dress of the Day: Long sleeved dress by Azzedine Alaia

This is such a simple dress, but it’s the kind of thing every woman should have in her wardrobe, because it will take you just about everywhere – work, play, dinner … OK, maybe not to the gym, say, but you get what I mean. Dress it up with a wide patent corset-belt, or make it look prettier with a bow. It’ll look great with dress shoes – in fact, those Delman stilettos we featured earlier today would be gorgeous with it, but it’ll look equally good with long leather boots. Can you tell that I really want it? It’s by Azzedine Alaia and is £1285 at Browns.

Crimes of Wedding Fashion: Pink and blue wedding gown with ruffles. For the bride who likes to smoke crack.

It’s your wedding day – one of the most important days of your life. Today you will walk down that aisle, surrounded by all of the most important people in your life, and marry the man of your dreams – or maybe not, actually, if you’re wearing this. Because I don’t know about you, but at no point in my dreams of the perfect wedding did it ever occur to me to think, "Mmm, shiny pink and blue satin with tulle ruffles on the train – sounds good to me!" Walk down the aisle in this little beauty and I can almost guarantee you’ll be walking back alone. Don’t say we didn’t warn you…

Dress of the Day: Purple chiffon bandeau dress by Oasis

Oh boy, but there’s a lot of purple dresses around at the moment. This is good news if you love purple, I guess, but it’s also good news if you like to stand out from the crowd as, given that everyone else is going to be wearing purple this winter, you now know exactly which colour to avoid. Just in case you’re not sure which shade of purple suits you best, Oasis have hedged their bets with this purple bandeau dress, using a couple of different shades, and then sticking on a lilac waist corsage for luck. Dressy enough to make a nice brideamaid or prom dress, some of you may find it a little too dressy for all but…

Best of eBay: Perfect Prom Dresses

A quick roundup of what’s happening on eBay this fine Thursday evening, kicking off with this gorgeous green dress from Coast, which isn’t in a traditional prom-style, but which is still rather stunning with that beautiful green silk and a fan-shaped embellishment on the front. It’s a UK size 16, is brand new with tags, and is at just £16 with two hours to go. Grab it fast, then come back to see what else we have for you after the jump…

Style Stealer: Carrie Underwood’s black and grey striped dress

It’s not exactly the same dress, but this striped dress by Bailey 44 is similar to the one Carrie Underwood was spotted wearing yesterday, but is only $66, and is a little more fitted than Carrie’s version, too. It’s a little too cold round these here parts for bare legs, so I’d be wearing this with tights and boots at the very least, or perhaps with a pair of black skinny jeans if it was really cold.

Dress of the Day: Green ‘Structural Drama’ dress by Karen Millen

I have no idea how this happened, but I’ve somehow managed to go through my entire life until now in complete ignorance of the fact that Karen Millen has an online store.  Now that I know about it, though, I kinda wish I’d never discovered it, because I can already tell that that this is going to be expensive. I’ve fallen hard for this apple green satin dress, which checks almost all of the boxes to make it my ideal dress: it’s green, it’s a little bit unusual, it’s completely freaking gorgeous… you know the kind of thing. I could probably live without the puffball shape, which I’d prefer to see left in the 80s, where it belongs, but it’s…

Floral Print Dresses: Monsoon v. Kate Moss for Topshop

When Kate Moss brought out her now infamous pansy print dress for Topshop it was a pretty safe bet that the other fashion retailers would follow suit. Kate now has clover print and poppy print dresses as part of her various Topshop collections (lucky girl!) but they remain expensive and sometimes hard to get hold of – especially if you’re buying them on eBay! This floral print tea dress by Monsoon isn’t exactly the same as the various ‘Kate’ dresses, but it’s less expensive, and you won’t have to rummage around eBay for hours to find one in your size. This style of dress looks great with boots and tights for winter – Kate would be proud…

Dress of the Day: Alexandra Dillon’s strapless tuxedo dress at Victoria’s Secret

I know “they” say you should never wear white after Labor Day, but hey, rules were made to be broken, and given that this dress is winter white I think we can claim a special dispensation to wear it.  It’s by Alexandra Dillon, and while in most cases I’d hesitate to wear a white dress to anything other than a wedding (and then only if I was the bride, obviously), the tuxedo detailing and big black bow makes this one very wearable. The retro-style foldover top is one of my favourite looks at the moment, and, well, we all know I’m a sucker for bows… I’d wear it with black patent stilettos and a matching clutch bag. You, of course,…
