To Buy or Not to Buy: Dorothy Perkins’ yellow ruffle vest

Liz writes… Hi Fashion Police! I really enjoyed last week’s ‘To Buy or Not to Buy’ feature, so I thought I’d submit a question of my own.  I think I already know the answer to this question but I am drawn to this yellow top from Dorothy Perkins for summer. But I think I might look like a Fashion Criminal in something so magnificently be-ruffled. What to do you think? ~ Liz

To Buy or Not to Buy: grey sundress from Miss Selfridge

Fashion Police reader Carrie wrote to us with a shopping dilemma today, and we thought we’d share it with our readers, to give Carrie the benefit of a few different viewpoints… Carrie writes… Dear Fashion Police, I’m looking for your advice on this grey dress from Miss Selfridge. I tend to live in jeans, and I want to stock up on some dresses for summer, but so far I haven’t been having much luck. I’m on the small side, so I really need something with a waist, or I look like I’m wearing a sack. The shape of this is just what I’m looking for, but I worried that the grey may be a bit too dull for summer? And…

Can you wear black to a wedding?

Dear Fashion Police, I’ve been invited to a friend’s wedding in March. The problem is, I tend to live in black, and I am not very good with colour. I have a couple of little black dresses which I love, but I’m worried that wearing black to a wedding is just "not done". Is it? Can I wear it, or will I just cause offence?  ~ Sara Sara, Personally, I say the "never wear black to a wedding" thing is outdated now. Black is a classic: it can be worn for more or less anything these days, and is no longer strictly funereal. To my mind, the only colour taboo for wedding guests involves wearing white, cream or any other…

Ask the Fashion Police: Do skinny jeans suit everyone?

Dear Fashion Police, I was given some money for Christmas and I want to use it to buy some new jeans. My friend suggested skinny jeans, but I’ve always assumed they were only for skinny people, which I’m definitely not! Can they suit anyone? (I’m a classic pear shape, with short legs, if it helps.) ~ Amanda Skinny jeans are actually much more versatile than people tend to think, and can be worn by lots of different shapes and sizes – not just skinny people! In answer to your question, though: no, they don’t suit everyone. Like any item of clothing, they’ll be less flattering on some shapes than they will on others (although this has nothing to do with…

Ask the Fashion Police: Versace’s Spring/Summer 08 Ad Campaign. Are those Louboutins I see before me?

Dear Fashion Police, What do you think of the shoes Gisele Bundchen is wearing in the Versace Spring 2008 campaign. They have red soles so i assumed they were Christian Louboutin but I’ve been reading that they might be Versace? Do you think Versace would actually produce a shoe with a red sole? ~ Ivette We’ve had a couple of questions about Versace’s Spring/Summer 08 ad campaign, featuring Gisele Bundchen, and some rather fabulous shoes, As beautiful as Gisele is, though, it’s the shoes that have been getting all the attention, but perhaps not for the reasons Versace imagined. No, the problem is that most people have been taking a look at those red soles (and probably the ruffle t-straps,…

Ask the Fashion Police: Solve My Tights Dilemma!

Dear Fashion Police, I’m hoping for some sage advice on what tights to wear with a wedding outfit (the wedding is on 22 December so I will have to wear tights. Or I will freeze). I will be wearing: this dress, these shoes in hot pink, this coat in ‘mercury’ (or grey): I’ll also be getting a shrug/bolero in either cream or pink. Now my dilemma is that I think nude tights will work best, but they’re not very fashionable? Would black opaques work or would they look odd with the shoes? I appreciate this isn’t, let’s say, the most fascinating dilemma but my brain is incapable of making a decision (it’s worn out from trying to find a frock…

Ask the Fashion Police: Find me a gold sequin dress!

Dear Fashion Police, Help! I’m looking for a gold sequin dress to wear to a party. There were loads of them around last year, but I can’t seem to find what I’m looking for, which is something plain, but covered in sequins! I’m in the UK." ~ Lindsay There are actually loads of these around this year, too – the trend hasn’t died out quite yet, which is lucky for you, Lindsay, or you’d end up looking SO 2006 at your Christmas party! (Note: just joking). The one that seems to suit your requirements most is this one by Love Label, which is £42. A classic shift shape jazzed up with those all-over sequins, which makes it eye-catching without making…

Ask the Fashion Police: Can I wear capri pants with boots?

Dear Fashion Police, I was rarely out of my black capri pants this summer, and I’m reluctant to give them up now that winter’s here. Can I wear them with boots, do you think, or is that a big fashion no-no? ~ Laura Well, Laura, it’s a difficult one. To be completely honest, I think capri pants and boots can look a little bit odd, but if you want to wear them together, I have two pieces of advice for you: 1. Narrow capri pants : the wider ones will just flap around your calves, make your legs look short, and be generally a bit strange. 2. Long boots. Make sure there’s absolutely no flesh showing between boots and pants,…

Ask the Fashion Police – reader participation edition! What to wear to ballet class?

Hey Fashion Police, I have a quick question. I’m a ballet dancer (pointe) and I often go to dance class feeling mismatched and frumpy! What can I wear to look good and be free to dance in? Michelle I’ve often thought that if I was a ballet dancer, I’d wear lots of little pale pink wrap sweaters with black leotards, or maybe a soft, wide neck knit, a bit like this one by Harmonie (let’s not even ask why I had that site bookmarked). The problem is, though, that I’m not a ballet dancer, even though I very much wish I was, and I? Am totally jealous of you, because I always wanted to wear pointe shoes and be all…

Ask the Fashion Police: ankle bracelets with tights

Dear Fashion Police, When wearing an ankle bracelet and panty hose…does the ankle bracelet go under or over the panty hose?  Thanks! Leslie Dear Leslie, OK, step away  from  the ankle bracelet  …. Nice and slow now, that’s it… Now, I’m no friend of the ankle bracelet, let’s be clear on that. (In fact, come to think of it, I’m no real friend of panty hose, either. But that’s another entry for another day.) But if you must wear one, there must be no panty hose. Oh, hell no. No good can come from the enactment of the ankle-bracelet-with-panty-hose crime. Only pain and heartache that way lies. Now, forget about the panty hose, and let’s never speak of this again….

Ask the Fashion Police: Find me a dress for senior prom!

"Dear Fashion Police, While it is not my senior prom, I was invited to prom by a friend and I really need help on choosing what kind of dress to wear. The country I live in is unkind (fashion-wise) to those who are larger than a size 2 . I am big in the hips, the breasts, the butt and thighs, while being reasonably smaller in the waist. I was wondering if you or others of the Fashion Police could help me choose a flattering style of dress for my kind of body. Thank you so much." Hi Deborah, Sounds like you have a classic hourglass figure, which makes you lucky because the standard prom dress shape was…

Waistband Stretchers and Where to Buy Them

I have a confession to make here: no one actually asked us about waistband stretchers. Over at my other blog, Forever Amber, though, I get so many hits every day from people who’ve found me having run a search for “waistband stretchers” (seriously, we’re talking five or six hits per day, and all because I once wrote a post about my attempt to buy one of these damn things) that I’m convinced there is a real demand out there for devices which make your jeans fit better. Yes, y’all need waistband stretchers, apparently, and you need ’em bad! Enter the Fashion Police…

Ask The Fashion Police: Where Can I Find Shiny Gold Tights?

Dear Fashion Police, Any idea where I can find some shiny gold tights? Anon Hello, our anonymous friend! You don’t say what denier of tights you’re looking for (or, indeed, where in the world you want to buy them), but I’m assuming that as you’re looking for something shiny and gold, you’re in the market for party tights. These are actually not so easy to find in January, with the party season well and truly over, but take a look after the jump and all will be revealed… Pamela Mann Gold Lurex Tights Et Voila! Gold lurex tights by Pamela Mann! These aren’t cheap at £9.99 a pair, but the lurex in them will make them a little bit harder…
