Simple and Cheap 80s fancy dress and Halloween costume ideas

Feeling lazy this Halloween? Looking for an appropriately scary Halloween costume that you can throw together in a few minutes, using items you might even already have in your wardrobe – or which you can at least pick up at the mall, given the current popularity of all things 80s? Well, it doesn’t get much scarier than 80s fashion, so here are some ideas for an easy 80s fancy dress costume…

1. Leggings

Leggings are the perfect building block for any 80s Halloween costume, and you struck it lucky here, because leggings are everywhere right now, having been back in fashion for a few years. For the full 80s effect, go for the loudest, most obnoxious print you can find. And if you want to make it super-scary, don’t wear anything to cover your butt. Instant 80s fashion criminal!

2. Neon

Ugly, isn’t it? Layer on as much of it as possible for your 80s Halloween costume. Extra points if you can find a pair of neon leggings…

3. Shoulder pads

The bigger the shoulder, the more 80s the look. Again, this look shouldn’t be too difficult to achieve because shoulderpads are back in big way this season. You can buy shoulderpads on their own, or go for one of the many tops or dresses that come with them pre-inserted, but if you don’t want to spend money on gigantic shoulders – and we don’t blame you – it’s easy enough to fake it by stuffing your shoulders with tissue, cotton wool or an old pair of tights. As with so much of 80s fashion, “the bigger, the better!” should be your maxim here.

4. Lace gloves

Remember Madonna in the Like a Virgin video? Or in Desperately Seeking Susan? There’s your 80s Halloween costume right there.

5. Accessories. Lots of them.

The key to 80s fashion accessories is to wear a LOT of them. Again, you can look to Madonna for your 80s Halloween costume inspiration: notice the layered necklaces and bracelets? Pile them on, folks…

6. Big hair

If you were alive in the 80s, you probably had big hair. Recreate that look for your 80s Halloween costume by teasing your hair until it’s as big as it gets, then spray it firmly in place – you don’t want it to move. Have fun washing it all out the next day!
