What to Wear... to the bowling alley: Rihanna's outfit

Rihanna

OK, OK, we confess: this isn't actually one of our reader-submitted What to Wear outfits, although if Rihanna would like to submit an outfit, she's more than welcome to. The point is, though: bowling. It's pretty damn hard to dress for, isn't it? And it's all because of those ugly ass shoes.  Not only do you have to put together an outfit that works with a mannish pair of lace-ups, you also have to allow for the fact that one of them is red and the other one is blue. (WHY?)

Rihanna here, pictured in London last week, has decided to get around the eternal "what to wear to the bowling alley" conundrum by simply embracing the clashiness, and has paired those red and blue shoes with a pair of shocking pink skinny jeans and tight-fitting black shirt. Oh, and she picked a red ball, too, which was at least better than a green or yellow one.

What do you think of Rihanna's bowling alley look? And, more importantly, what would you wear with a pair of shoes like that?

What to Wear... to a Valentine's Day Dinner: Virginia's Outfit

Valnetinesday_2

Although Virginia's outfit is designer from top to toe and, as she says herself, would cost more than most cars, she also points out that the same look can be achieved fairly easily using pieces from the High Street - and, in fact, she's done just that, with another outfit which we'll be showing you later. Meanwhile, these items all come from Net-a-Porter, a.k.a. "Where we'd shop all the time if we were rich."

Virginia's picks: gloves; top; jeans; shoes; blazer; wrap; bag; bangles; bangles

What to Wear... to a Valentine's Day dinner: Nancy's Outfit

Valentinesday_2

We don't know where Nancy is planning on going for Valentine's day, but it must be somewhere pretty fancy, because her outfit includes this Miu Miu prom dress, some purple Louboutins and a splash of animal print. She's even decided what kind of lingerie to wear, choosing knickers that come inside a gold passport case!

Nancy's picks:  dress; boots; necklace; bag; lingerie

What to Wear... to a Valentine's Day dinner: Heidi's outfit

Valentinesday

We still have lots of reader-submitted Valentine's Day outfits to show you, so without further ado, here's Heidi's submission, which we absolutely love - props to Forever 21 for the bow dress and bracelt sleeve jacket (we love the splash of red with all the grey), and thanks to Heidi for putting it together.

We've had so many entries to this edition of What to Wear that we're going to be struggling to fit them all in before Valentine's Day, so while we will, of course, be publishing the entries we've already received, sorry, but we can't accept any more. Stay tuned, though, for a new What to Wear challenge soon!

What to Wear... to a Valentine's Day dinner

Valentinesday_2_2

It's almost February, which means we'll soon be having to put up with all of those tedious, "So, what are you doing for Valentine's Day?" questions. On the other hand, we'll take any excuse for a good meal, so in honour of the occassion, we're bringing back our What to Wear slot, in which you get to take over the site and tell us what you'd wear to a particular event.

In this case, the event in question is a Valentine's Day dinner, and the restaurant is up to you, so it can be as smart or as casual as you want it to be. We've quickly put together a dressed-up outfit above: now it's up to you. Tell us what you'd wear for Valentine's Day by leaving us a comment with links to each item: we'll do the rest...

(P.S. If you get a message saying that your comment has been sent to the spam folder, don't worry - we'll fish it out for you, so you don't need to bother posting twice!)

Oscar Fashion for... Dita Von Teese - Monique Lhuillier, S/S 08

Ditavonteese

Next up on the red carpet at the Fake Oscars (you know, the ones being held by The Fashion Police, just in case the real ceremony doesn't happen), it's Dita Von Teese, who we think will look stunning in this black dress by Monique Lhuillier, with the only touch of colour coming from Dita's red lips, red nails (MAC, naturally), and the red soles of her Louboutins. She'll look like the bride of Dracula, of course, but hey, she should be used to that by now...

Oscar Fashion for... Gwen Stefani - Alexander McQueen S/S 08

Gwenstafani

For the next of our "Fake Oscars" series, we'd dress Gwen Stefani in this fabulous creation by Alexander McQueen. I think "creation" is the only word for this dress, and I also think Gwen is one of the few people who could really pull it off. There's something very "costumey" about it, but hey, if you can't wear something dramatic to The Oscars - or the Fake Oscars, even - then when can you wear it?

Fake Oscar Fashion: Nicole Kidman

Oscar Fashion for... Nicole Kidman - Versace S/S 08

Nicolekidman

At this point we're not even sure whether The Oscars will even happen this year or not (and even if they do, The Fashion Police's invitation seems to have been mysetriously lost in the post - AGAIN), so, just in case we don't get the opportunity to oggle the celebrities in their fancy frocks, we've decided to throw caution to the winds and dress them up ourselves. It may be the cloest thing we get to an Oscar fashion parade, folks, so if you have any suggestions for a star you'd like to style, please feel free to drop us a comment with your suggested outfit.

First up is pregnant Nicole Kidman, who we've chosen to dress in this diaphanous green creation from Versace's Spring/Summer 08 collection. We know Nicole likes to keep things pale and interesting (although last year she did surprise us with a bright red dress), and this will continue that ethereal, paler-than-pale look she's been going for lately, as well as covering up the beginnings of her baby bump - not, of course, that we've seen any evidence of one yet. You'd have to be either a) pregnant or b) as naturally tall and willowy as Nicole anyway to be able to get away with this kind of loose shape...

What to Wear to the Christmas Party: Whit's Outfit

For this outfit, Whit has put together something a little more casual, for those of us whose Christmas parties are relaxed affairs at which spangly dresses and strappy stilettos would make us look more overdressed than Paris Hilton at Halloween.  See the links below to find out more about each item, and if you'd like to take part and put together a Christmas party outfit, just leave the links to your items in the comments field below (don't worry if it says it's going to the spam folder - we'll get it back out!)

Christmas party fashion from Love Label

Lovelabel

I don't often look at the UK catalogue sites, like Great Universal and Additions Direct, which is a bit stupid of me, really, because every time I do remember to check them out, I tend to find at least one thing I like. Today my eye was caught by this black tuxedo jacket with jacquard lining, which plays on one of the season's big trends and the cute little purple puff sleeve dress - also on trend at the moment by virtue of being purple.

The jacket is £45, and the dress £55. I'd worry a little about the texture of the dress, which looks satiny and perhaps liable to crush, but I like the puff sleeves and the nipped-in waist, and I guess there's only one way to find out for sure...

What to Wear to... Work

Work

I don't have to wear a suit to work anymore (this being because my "office" is otherwise known as "the spare bedroom, with a couple of desks in it" and the dress code is "whatever the hell I feel like, but mostly whatever I was wearing to bed the night before" - GOD), but if I did wear a suit to work, this is the suit I'd wear. I'm loving the tailored, 1940s vibe of the French Connection pencil skirt and jacket, and while you could play it safe with a nice pair of sensible court shoes here, these teal knee boots by poetic licence are just too nice to pass up - not to mention giving the outfit a more modern twist that'll stop you look like you're on your way to a costume party as a 40s typist. The clutch bag doesn't quite match the boots, and won't hold too many of your office essentials, but hey...I like it. Prices and stores after the jump...

Green oval drop necklace: £8
Silver satin peep toes: £25
Matt silver flap clutch: £5
