Westboro Baptist Church hates fashion week, is grateful for 9/11

Religious nuts protest against fashion week

Memebers of Westbro Baptist Church staged a protest against Fashion Week outside Lincoln Centre this weekend, before rolling the hate wagon onwards to protest at 9/11 memorials. Yeah, nice folks. So Christian!

Their spokesman, Steve Drain, had this message for the fashion lovers of the world:

“The whole thing is vanity! You’re going to teach the women, especially the young women of this country, to doll themselves up … All you are doing is teaching girls to be proud whores! The whole idea [of the] fashion industry is to make women look as whorish as possible and men look as effeminate at possible. Put some jeans on and fear God. Forget about all this fashion nonsense.”

So that told US, then! Putting jeans on now! God forbid people get… DOLLED UP!

Westbro also hate “fags”, women, and, well, just about everyone, basically. More reasonable Christian groups must be banging their heads off their desks right now and cursing them for preaching the exact OPPOSITE of love and tolerance.

We would say more about this – and honestly, the fashion-related comments are by far the LEAST offensive part of this group’s message, as you can see from the image above – but honestly, it would be like shooting fish in a barrel, wouldn’t it? After all, they’re doing such a good job of discrediting themselves that our work here is done…

I hate seeing photos like this, because this is what gets media attention and can send the wrong message out to people about Christianity, as if all Christians were nutjobs like the ones above (although, I think most people will understand that those guys are definitely a special case… :/) I’m not particularly religious, but grrr, people like this make me mad!

Yeah, as I said, I expect Christians are probably more annoyed than anyone else by this kind of thing, because it’s so contrary to what most of them stand for!

It isn’t really accurate to even call this a church. The members are essentially Fred Phelps and his children and grandchildren. One son escaped the family, and has published a book detailing the abuse the mother and children endured at Phelp’s hand, his wild emotional swings and arbitrary punishments.

This isn’t a church, it’s a hostage situation that no one will resolve because we have to ‘tolerate’ religious differences. As a non-Christian, I find it appalling.

I got the pleasure of being harassed by the WBC personally last year when I was in the Florida Panhandle and went to the Israeli Independence Day festivities at the Jewish community center. They don’t like Israeli very much (raise your hand if you are surprised by that one). They are even worse in real life, believe it or not.

Did you see the documentary that Louis Theroux made about these people? It’s actually terribly tragic for some of the members too. Basically it’s one evil patriach figure who then indoctrinates all the children of the family through fear. Even they don’t seem to understand why they hate, only that they do. They don’t have normal lives, or the ability to marry and if they question their crazy religion they are immediately cut off. It is all very wrong.

They had five year old children standing by the road with these kind of hatred filled signs. It just made you want to weep.

A very, very odd group of people.

Religion brings out the best and worst in people.

But to stay on topic, that woman is wearing red running shoes an a midi skirt…
