Star Style on Trial: Victoria Beckham in Giambattista Valli at the launch of her ‘Signature’ scent in Manchester

Victoria_beckham_giambattis

Despite the criticism she receives for her figure, her fake tans, her nails, her pout… just for being alive, basically… most of the time we have to admit to finding Victoria Beckham’s dress sense pretty inoffensive. OK, she’s had her moments, but sometimes her outfits are downright covetable. And then, other times, they’re like a mullet. We’re speaking literally here, because yes, that appears to be fur on Victoria’s back, and given that a furry back is pretty much the last thing we’d want for ourselves, this dress has puzzled us – all the more so because it’s so perfect from the front.

This is from Giambattista Valli’s Autumn/Winter 08 collection, and we think Vic must have been going for the “angel sent to earth” look here – albeit an angel with a furry back. The combination of slim shift dress and swept-up hair is very Audrey Hepburn, the silver heels add a modern touch and… then there’s the furry back. Which, to be completely honest, just makes us want to take a razor to it, although, to be fair, we think Vic is actually making it work.

What say you, readers? An angel sent to earth or your idea of fashion hell? Tell us in the comments…

Yes, I’m not sure whether it’s real fur or fake, to be honest. Anyone know?

It’s fake fur. At least that’s what the offical ASOS blog says..

Fake *or* real, the placement and scale of that fur make an otherwise passable dress ugly as sin.

What a shame. This would have looked lovely if it wasn’t for the furry back. From the side it looks like an odd sort of rucksack (like the “shaun the sheep” ones kids used to carry about) Extremely odd.

I don’t care for the fur either. It would have been a very nice look without it. I would assume the designers are always trying to find a way to make their designs… stand out, but in my opinion, simply going for classic elegance is often the better strategy.

Wouldn´t be THAT bad if it wasn´t because of the fur, it looks horrible.

Furry backs have never been fashionable. Men get waxed for that very reason.

Yes, really quite…boggling. I’ve come around on Vics in general though, to be honest. There’s something about her that’s not so hideously in-your-face celeb about her, if that makes any sense. Like she looks like she’d be fond of pranks and off-colour jokes and laughs inappropriately in the movie theatre like the rest of us.

Definitely hate the furry patch. Even if they were going for the ‘angel sent to Earth’ look, I don’t think Victoria should be the one to wear it, coz she certainly hasn’t been an angel in the past… But… with that said…I don’t think there are many other people who will be crazy enough to brave a furry back.

What a great dress.. and then I saw the rest of it.. what a shame it has angel wings?
Or is it the remains of a slayed big foot?
But seriously what tha Funk where she thinkin?
Or maybe she didnt, maybe this is a case of a stylist gone angry (A personal vendetta turned ugly and public with this horrible dress) one wonders?
I don’t think we will ever know..
The one thing we know is nobody will be seen in that horror again.. (Not including crazy dresser Bai Ling.. Of course)

The fox fur trim is what makes the dress so stunning. Not many people could have gotten away with it but here Victoria looks so elegant and beautiful.
