We’ll be back to our regular programming tomorrow, but for now we’re continuing our coverage of New York Fashion Week with a look at Victoria Beckham’s Spring 2011 dress collection. Victoria says she’s created these dresses with the “curvier” woman in mind, which is certainly a bit of a departure – not just for Vic, but for the fashion industry in general. She’s also added handbags to her line, previewing some of the new designs along with the dresses. This collection has already won a lot of praise, with some commentators saying it marks Beckham’s arrival as a “proper” designer. We think our readers should be the judge of that, though, so take a look under the jump and tell us what you think.

We’re not sure about the dress, but we’re LOVING this model’s expression!

Victoria clearly anticipates that purple eyeshadow will be big in Spring 2011. That’s if there’s any of it left after this show.

The dress was so bright, the model had to wear shades.

We’re guessing it was fairly cold on the runway.

Victoria must’ve got a great deal on a truckload of yellow fabric!

Seriously, no one can sneer better than this girl. We want her to going the force.

This one look a little like a paper bag. We mean that as a compliment.

    Shoes not blues

The English magazines are always gushing about VB’s designs, but I don’t quite get them. To me there’s always a whiff of Project Runway-contestant about them. If I were mean (when I’m mean I suppose, to be honest)I’d call her designs derivative. But then again, I’m not English so I don’t have that sense of ‘oh, look at our Vickie, isn’t she clever?. Sorry! But they’re not hideous or anything.

I kinda feel the same way. This collection does nothing for me. Is it really just because I’m an American?

Well, I’m french, and she doesn’t bowl me over, so no, I don’t think it’s just because you’re american… I like the really clean designs, but nothing I’ve seen is really terribly original or exciting… I dunno. I’m a little blaise about the whole thing, i think.

White dresses are especially beautiful, and the one with a full length zipper in the back is extremely sexy!

I’d call it a 50/50. Love the first and the third bright yellow dress, as well as the white flowy one and the white floorlength gown. But she has as many misses as hits, I’d say. And she looks a bit washed out. Never thought I’d say it, but I do believe she could do with a tad more makup.

So these dresses were designed for curvier women, yes? Then how come the models wearing them are all thin as rails?! They are clearly not “filling” the clothes. Or is this the fashion industry’s idea of curvy women? Well, maybe all the other models were in Perth at that time… 😉
(By the way: That scowling model reminds me of a blowfish…)

I think they’re all a bit dull and lumpy. “Curvier” women by Victoria’s standards evidently doesn’t mean very much: I think she just means women who are still much thinner than most of the population but actually possess some semblance of a normal human shape.

And what has happened to her face? It looks like it’s melted a bit.

I didn’t see anything that would look good on a “curvy” woman… unless you count the purple muumuu, and that just seems cruel to inflict on anyone, much less a heavier person.

Really isn’t working for me either. Except for that one white dress there is nothing in there that I would wear without somebody forcing me to.

I don’t know why, but I love VBs designs. There is somethign very classic about them, and I don’t doubt that if I had one it would be one of those loyal go-to dresses that would be worn for seasons to come. I love them all!

i like some of them. They’re not amazing though. The models’ expressions are really funny though. Why don’t they look remotely happy? Are they modeling robots and have no sense of feeling? Why would you want people to wear your clothes that don’t look like they enjoy wearing them? I like the 4th, 8th, 9th, 15th and 20th. The rest really don’t impress me at all.

I can’t help thinking of the MG Association’s “Give us a smile” poster campaign when looking at the pouty model. (From what I’ve read about the condition, I doubt she actually has it.)

The makeup and expressions on the models are actually terrifying. Also going to point out that these women do have a curvy shape (which is what curvy actually means); they’re just also very thin.

Anyway onto the actual clothes… I really don’t like that oval waistline on many of the dresses. I don’t think it looks flattering on the models and I’m struggling to think of any figure it would suit. The beige one shouldered one, the yellow one after it and a couple of the white ones are nice, but nothing special. The random bulges and creases in the last yellow one make it look like it was thrown together in 2mins with some leftover fabric. Her intention perhaps?

I think some of these are actually gorgeous, especially the third bright yellow one. Paper bag and the pinkish one with the pockets are pretty lush too!

And these are Victoria Beckham? Cool..

I like them. Mostly. OK,they are not all original but they do look good. Also, I have seen / touched / admired a VB design (they come numbered, too!) in the flesh, and the quality was superb.

I really tend to love Victoria’s collections as they have a classic feel to them and look nicely tailored. However, a lot of the items in this collection are a miss for me. The only ones I love are pictures 4, 9 and 20.
