The Holiday Sweater Gets a High Fashion Makeover

Remember Holiday Sweaters? Here, let us remind you:

holiday sweater with snowmanThis kind of thing, yes?

Until recently, holiday sweaters were the preserve of those poor unfortunates who were given one as a gift, and forced to wear it, lest they cause offence. Oh, and the Cosby family, obviously.

Now, however, the humble holiday sweater is having a fashion renaissance, which means that this Christmas it’s going to be hard to tell the fashion victims from those rather earnest souls who wear light-up earrings in the shape of reindeer and drape pieces of tinsel around themselves in a bid to look “festive”. Or maybe not, because the new generation of holiday sweater is at least a little less garish, and a little more stylish than the ones of old. Witness:

reindeer holiday sweaterMarkus Lupfer, $480

designer sweaterStella McCartney, $1,145

Holiday sweater with puppiesMarkus Lupfer, $475

holiday sweaterAubin & Wills, $375

At these prices, we think it’s time to persuade granny to get the knitting needles out…

The white Lupfer and McCartney? Yes, please. Aubin & Wills if I absolutely had to. Moschino for shiz and giggles, although I’d rather pin the image to my wall than wear it…

Most of these are ok, and they do look WARM! While I would never buy any sweater for those prices I would most certainly buy them while rummaging though the rack at the thrift store, my art studio gets very cold. The angry snow man is pretty spectacular.

Except for the Moschino, none are that different from what you’d find on the shelves for $29.99 almost anyplace this season of the year. Wait until after December 15 and get them for $5 on the close out rack.
