Michelle Williams in shorts at the Independent Spirit Awards

Michelle Williams in a navy and black short suit

Because The Oscars have the ability to take over the world, and suddenly nothing else matters except Angelina Jolie’s leg and all of the other antics upon that most famous of red carpets, we’re a little bit behind with our celebrity watching, and are having to go back in time to show you some of the outfits we missed while we were obsessing over the Oscars.

(Not literally, obviously. If we had the power to go back in time, Crocs wouldn’t exist, because we would’ve put a stop to them before they started. Ditto harem pants, and all of the other awfulness of the fashion world. And then WE wouldn’t need to exist, because there would be no fashion crimes for us to fight: we’d have already fought them all. Thank goodness time travel isn’t real, huh?)

First up in Michelle Williams, seen here at the Independent Spirit Awards this weekend, wearing a shorts suit, and carrying another Olympia le Tan book bag.

Now, normally we’d hate this. We’d think the combination of short pants + blazer + short hair + book = naughty schoolboy from the 50s.

Actually, though, we think Michelle looks absolutely adorable here, and we wouldn’t change a single thing about it.

What about you?

Fashion Police at the 2012 Oscars: Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton

Michelle Williams in an orange dress at the 2012 oscars

Michelle Williams may not have won the Best Actress Award for her performance in My Week With Marilyn, but she DID wear one of the most eye-catching dresses of the evening.

Which is really all that matters, isn’t it?

(We’re joking.)

(We’re not.)

Michelle’s dress is by Louis Vuitton, and the fact that it’s orange makes it, like, SO bang on trend, dahlinks. Do you like it, though? Or is it one ruffle short of a 70s bedspread?

Michelle Williams wears H&M to the 2012 BAFTA Awards

Michelle Williams in H&M 2012 BAFTAs

Now, don’t go getting too excited here: while it IS true that Michelle Williams’ BAFTA dress is technically “by H&M”, you’re not going to be able to waltz into your local store and pick one up – no, not even if you queue all night and push other shoppers out of the way, like when the H&M designer collaborations come to town – because this gown was custom made by the brand for Williams to wear on the red carpet.

The good news – if you like it, that is – is that H&M say the dress has inspired a skirt and top combo, which will be available later this Spring. We’re actually more interested in Michelle’s Olympia le Tan ‘Misfits’ clutch bag: a little nod to her role as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn.

Fashion Police at the 2012 Golden Globes: Michelle Williams in Jason Wu

Michelle Williams in Jason Wu at the 2012 Golden Globes

She may have picked up the Best Actress award for her performance in My Week With Marilyn, but, of course, it’s her performance on the red carpet that’s of concern to The Fashion Police, and what we want to know is whether Michelle Williams was worthy of the Best Dressed award at last night’s Golden Globes?

Michelle wore a black and navy dress by Jason Wu, with a high neckline and three-quarter length sleeves. What did you think of it?

Michelle Williams channels Marilyn Monroe on the cover of Vogue October 2011

Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe on the cover of Vogue

We don’t normally feature magazine spreads here, because, well, we figure that’s what the magazines themselves are for, but we couldn’t resist this time, because we absolutely love these photos of Michelle Williams, shot by Annie Leibovitz for the October edition of Vogue.

Michelle plays Marilyn Monroe in the new film, My Week With Marilyn, and channels the blonde bombshell perfectly in these images, thus guaranteeing that we’ll watch the film for the fashion alone.

The October issue of US Vogue is on news-stands from September 22nd.

Fashion Police at the 68th Annual Golden Globes: the rest

Just in case yesterday’s Golden Globes gallery wasn’t quite enough for you, here are a few of the celebrities we didn’t catch up with yesterday:

Jennifer Love Hewitt, that’s one hell of a crumb-catcher:

Carrie Underwood:

So far this selection is making us feel a bit like we’re at a very posh mass wedding.

It must be a complete bummer when you turn up at an awards ceremony and realise that so many other people went with the same colour of gown, mustn’t it? (Yes, people who wore green, we’re looking at you…) One long white gown tends to blend into another after the third photo, but Dianna Agron still looks absolutely gorgeous, no?

Elizabeth Moss was part of the “lets all wear green” brigade. Looking good on it, though.

Not the best photo, unfortunately, but Eva Longoria Parker always does Dramatic Long Black Gown very well.

And it goes without saying that Helena Bonham Carter does “Look, I’m so wacky I’m wearing mismatched shoes!” very well, too. Or as well as can be expected, anyway.

Finally:

We don’t even know what to say about Michelle Williams. Your thoughts?

Best Dressed of the Day: Michelle Williams in Jason Wu at the Venice Film Festival

Honestly? We’re not totally convinced we love this dress. In fact, at first glace we weren’t sure we even liked it. Some days, however, there are slim pickings in the world of celebrity fashion, and on those days we simply pick the most unusual dress we can find, and let you be the judge of it.

This dress is by Jason Wu, and was worn by Michelle Williams to the Meek’s Cutoff premiere at the Venice Film Festival last night. We LOVE the hair and makeup, HATE the clutch (although it would’ve been fine with a different choice of dress), and… are still on the fence over the dress, but have to give Michelle credit for wearing something so different.

So, what’s the verdict?

Celebrity Style on Trial: Michelle Williams in a demi-“shress”

Michelle Williams Shutter Island premiere

We see what happened here: Michelle Williams knew The Fashion Police would be out and about at the Shutter Island premiere this week, BUT she still wanted to wear a shress (Motive: unknown), so she thought she’d manage to sneak this one in under our radar by taking half-measures, i.e. a HALF SHRESS. In other words, only half of the skirt is sheer. Hmm, now we think of it, we’re not sure if this is yet another example of the dreaded “leg window” in that case?

Whtever you want to call it, what we want to know is what you think of it? Does the fact that this dress is sheer on one side only make it a lesser crime than that its fully-sheer sisters? Or does the undecided nature of it make you wish it would just make its mind up whether it wants to be a long skirt or a short one, and then stick to it? Tell us!
