Now, don’t go getting too excited here: while it IS true that Michelle Williams’ BAFTA dress is technically “by H&M”, you’re not going to be able to waltz into your local store and pick one up – no, not even if you queue all night and push other shoppers out of the way, like when the H&M designer collaborations come to town – because this gown was custom made by the brand for Williams to wear on the red carpet.
The good news – if you like it, that is – is that H&M say the dress has inspired a skirt and top combo, which will be available later this Spring. We’re actually more interested in Michelle’s Olympia le Tan ‘Misfits’ clutch bag: a little nod to her role as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn.
She may have picked up the Best Actress award for her performance in My Week With Marilyn, but, of course, it’s her performance on the red carpet that’s of concern to The Fashion Police, and what we want to know is whether Michelle Williams was worthy of the Best Dressed award at last night’s Golden Globes?
Michelle wore a black and navy dress by Jason Wu, with a high neckline and three-quarter length sleeves. What did you think of it?
We don’t normally feature magazine spreads here, because, well, we figure that’s what the magazines themselves are for, but we couldn’t resist this time, because we absolutely love these photos of Michelle Williams, shot by Annie Leibovitz for the October edition of Vogue.
Michelle plays Marilyn Monroe in the new film, My Week With Marilyn, and channels the blonde bombshell perfectly in these images, thus guaranteeing that we’ll watch the film for the fashion alone.
The October issue of US Vogue is on news-stands from September 22nd.
So far this selection is making us feel a bit like we’re at a very posh mass wedding.
It must be a complete bummer when you turn up at an awards ceremony and realise that so many other people went with the same colour of gown, mustn’t it? (Yes, people who wore green, we’re looking at you…) One long white gown tends to blend into another after the third photo, but Dianna Agronstill looks absolutely gorgeous, no?
Elizabeth Moss was part of the “lets all wear green” brigade. Looking good on it, though.
Not the best photo, unfortunately, but Eva Longoria Parkeralways does Dramatic Long Black Gown very well.
And it goes without saying that Helena Bonham Carter does “Look, I’m so wacky I’m wearing mismatched shoes!” very well, too. Or as well as can be expected, anyway.
Finally:
We don’t even know what to say about Michelle Williams. Your thoughts?
Honestly? We’re not totally convinced we love this dress. In fact, at first glace we weren’t sure we even liked it. Some days, however, there are slim pickings in the world of celebrity fashion, and on those days we simply pick the most unusual dress we can find, and let you be the judge of it.
This dress is by Jason Wu, and was worn by Michelle Williams to the Meek’s Cutoff premiere at the Venice Film Festival last night. We LOVE the hair and makeup, HATE the clutch (although it would’ve been fine with a different choice of dress), and… are still on the fence over the dress, but have to give Michelle credit for wearing something so different.
We see what happened here: Michelle Williams knew The Fashion Police would be out and about at the Shutter Island premiere this week, BUT she still wanted to wear a shress (Motive: unknown), so she thought she’d manage to sneak this one in under our radar by taking half-measures, i.e. a HALF SHRESS. In other words, only half of the skirt is sheer. Hmm, now we think of it, we’re not sure if this is yet another example of the dreaded “leg window” in that case?
Whtever you want to call it, what we want to know is what you think of it? Does the fact that this dress is sheer on one side only make it a lesser crime than that its fully-sheer sisters? Or does the undecided nature of it make you wish it would just make its mind up whether it wants to be a long skirt or a short one, and then stick to it? Tell us!
Dress of the Day comes to life, as Michelle Williams turns up at the Shutter Island advance screening in this white Lanvin dress, which we featured just a few days ago.
This dress also made an appearance in the March issue of UK Vogue, and we like it a little more each time we see it. What do you think of Michelle’s look here?
