Style on Trial: Madonna in Marchesa at the W.E New York premiere

Madonna in a black Marchesa dress as the W.E. premiere

We’ve shown you Andrea Riseborough at the New York premiere of W.E., so now here’s the boss lady, Madonna.

You can TELL that Madonna is the boss of this movie, can’t you? Nothing says “don’t mess with me” like big, pouffy shoulders. Madonna’s are by Marchesa, and she’s been getting a lot of praise lately for dressing in a way that’s a little more “age appropriate”, which is one of the most depressing phrases in the fashion lexicon. We wouldn’t expect Madonna cares much about whether people think she’s age appropriate or not, though, and honestly, good for her: she gives us hope that there’s still fashion after 50, and after all, why shouldn’t there be?

What do you think of this look?

Fashion Police at the 2012 Golden Globes: Madonna in Reem Acra

Madonna at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards

Never mind the award itself (Best Original Song, in case you’re wondering): Madonna’s OWN Golden Globes look like they’re trying very hard to escape from the fabric prison of her Reem Acra dress, no?

(Sorry: in every Golden Globes roundup, there has to be at least one joke comparing someone’s breasts to Golden Globes. It’s an Internet law.)

Madonna sadly can’t step onto the red carpet now without the phrase “for her age” being thrown around (See also Helen Mirren), and also without huge speculation as to what she may or may not have had done to her face this week. We only care about what she’s wearing, though, so what’s the verdict, jurors?

Madonna tries to bring back shants

Madonna wears see through pants

Somehow, amidst all of the Fashion Week weirdness we’ve been witnessing lately, Madonna managed to get a pair of shants past our radar. Honestly, we take our eyes off her for ONE MINUTE, and she does this. And she was doing so well, too!

TOO. MUCH. INFORMATION, Madonna. Rule of thumb: if we can see what colour the lining of your pockets is, your pants are too sheer. These pants fail to pass that test. Back to jail they go…

Fashion Police at the 2011 MET Gala: Madonna in Stella McCartney

Madonna always likes to be different, so while everyone else was busy working out how to interpret the “Savage Beauty” theme of this year’s MET Gala, she just thought “Screw it!” and went for old Hollywood glamour. And looked pretty good in it, too, we thought…
