Fashion Police in Cannes: Salma Hayek in a red leather Gucci dress

Well, that’s an unual detail on Salma Hayek’s shoulders, isn’t it? In fact, it looks almost like Anthony Banderas!

Whoops, our mistake! That IS Anthony Banderas, and he’s not actually on her shoulders, he’s just standing behind them. Which was a bit of a disappointment, actually, because when first we glanced at this photo, we were all, “Wow, Salma is STRONG! You go girl!” But we’re not here to talk about Anthony Banderas, or Salma’s strength. We’re here to talk about her red leather Gucci dress:

This was the best photo our agency had of it. Yes, we were disappointed too, because this has to be one of the more interesting red carpet dresses of recent times. A leather dress? In that heat? And a shrug over the top? It may look good (or, of course, it may not, and we’ll let you be the judge of that), but it makes us feet HOT. And not in a good way.

What do you think?

Confused clothing: crepe and leather dress by Maison Martin Margiela

Maison Martin Margiela asymmetric crepe and leather dressDon’t you hate it when this happens?  You get to a party and you realise that you’re wearing half your leather dress and half a crepe one.  And then you realise that you don’t own any dresses that split in half, so this must be another crime of fashion from our old friends at Maison Martin Margiela.

We could probably let this go if both halves of the dress were the same length and looked like they belonged together, but as it is it just looks like someone stuck two pieces of two dresses together and called it a mess dress.

What do you think though?  Would you wear this dress?  It is sold out in 3 sizes so someone must be buying it.  If you want it, it can be yours for £685 here.

Dresses, Style On Trial

Style on Trial: Christopher Kane ‘Jenny’ leather and lace embroidered dress

This dress sold out almost instantly when it arrived at Net-a-Porter a few weeks ago, which kinda surprised us really because, quite apart from the £2,225 price tag, the combination of leather, lace and floral embroidery just didn’t strike us as the kind of thing that would have widespread appeal, especially when you consider the back view:

Celebrity Fashion Moment of the Day: Leighton Meester in leather at Chanel Couture

Leighton Meester in a leather dress at Chanel Couture

This is technically a fashion moment of yesterday, but please don’t hold it against us: instead, just tell us what you think of Leighton Meester’s appearance at the Chanel Couture show wearing a leather, long-sleeved dress by – who else? – Chanel, and what look like Christian Louboutin peep toe boots.

Our first thought: man, she must have been sweltering!

Our second thought: It was possibly worth it, though: she looks fantastic.

What do you think of Leighton’s look?

Dita Von Teese in leather at the Dior Couture summer show

Dita Von Teese in a leather dressDita Von Teese has come under a fair bit of criticism from Fashion Police readers recently, for sticking too rigidly to her favourite retro looks, and, well, for the frankly horrifying “look what’s up my sleeves!” dress she wore to The Art of Elysium’s 3rd Annual Gala.

This leather dress and thigh-high boots combo, then, is a bit of a departure for Dita, although by keeping her hair and makeup firmly on the retro side, she’s still managed to make it look very “Dita”, we think. Is that a good thing or a bad thing, though? You decide.

Dress of the Day: Leather mini dress from Marc by Marc Jacobs, Fall 2008

Marcjacobs Marc, we know we’ve given you a hard time for some of your more questionable shoe designs over the years, but we’d like to commend you for this leather mini dress, which is so fabulous that we’ve decided to make it our Dress of the Day.

If we had the legs for it, we’d totally wear this with the black beret and opaque tights you’ve suggested here: we love the stand up collar and even although we’ve never really been fans of leather dresses, we think we could make an exception for this one.

Sadly, we don’t have the legs, or, indeed, the money. But well done, anyway.
