What with all the fuss surrounding the Grammy Awards, and the BAFTAs, and the Elle Style Awards, and New York Fashion Week and all those other things that make February the official Month From Hell™ here at Fashion Police HQ, Katy Perry thought she’d managed to fly under The Fashion Police’s radar with this outfit, worn to the 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year Gala Honoring Paul McCartney last week.
Not so, Katy P: The Fashion Police see all, and you’re not getting off that easily.
That said, the hat is really the only aspect of this outfit that may require policing. The dress itself is gorgeous and delicate, and even the hat is something of a work of art: we’re getting a bit of an “Edwardian lady taking tea in the garden” vibe from the whole look, albeit the Edwardian lady has blue hair. Which would be kind of awesome, when you really think about it.
On reflection, we think we’re going to let her off with this: in fact, we might even love it. Even although, from certain angles, it makes her look like she has a giant pink towel on her head.
Katy Perry has rather lost her ability to surprise us with different hair colours and dressing like a cartoon character, so for last night’s Grammy Awards, she decided to do it with an uncharacteristically “Princessy” dress by Elie Saab.
The fact that we can totally imagine Meryl Streep in this did take us aback somewhat, and it’s definitely not Katy’s usual look, but what do you think of it? Did she pull it off?
For a long time now, we’ve been asking ourselves the question: who would wear all of those mouse ear headbands we keep seeing on retail websites?
It was kind of a stupid question, huh?
OBVIOUSLY Katy Perry would wear them. And here she is, doing exactly that (and wearing a Christian Dior dress and jacket along with them) as she promotes her new fragrance, ‘Purr’ in Toronto.
Next question: why does she remind us so much of Leighton Meester in these photos?
And one last question before we go: have any of you tried the fragrance? Is it any good? We tend to walk right past celebrity fragrances without even stopping to try them, because they always seem a bit… tacky… somehow, but perhaps we’re just being terrible snobs, and missing out on something fantastic, in which case we’re willing to give them a chance. Your thoughts?
Apparently one of the ways Russell Brand feels he’s influenced Katy Perry’s sense of style has been to encourage her to dress “less like a cartoon character”. For that, we thank Mr. Brand. The Fashion Police support any and all attempts to reduce the number of cartoon characters on our streets. We also quite like this dress, which Katy wore to the European premiere of Arthur. You?
Our full coverage of last nights Grammy and BAFTA Awards (Why must they have them on the same night? And during New York Fashion Week? Will no one think of the bloggers?) will be along shortly, so please check back soon for that. While you’re waiting, however, here’s a quick look at Katy Perry’s Grammy arrival gown. This surely wouldn’t have looked too out of place amongst some of the ugly wedding dresses here at The Fashion Police, but given that this is Katy Perry we’re looking at, you have to really chance your whole reference frame, don’t you? Compared to some of the things we’ve seen Katy wear to awards shows, it actually looks quite elegant/restrained.
The rest of the world may be dreaming of Fall, but Katy Perry (and The Fashion Police) is still clinging onto summer style, choosing a floral tube dress, fluffy pink cardigan and Christian Louboutin peep toes to attend meetings in New York City this week.
Katy’s style can be just a little too OTT a lot of the time, but we think this is a sweet look for the the end of summer. What do you think?
We saved the best – or possibly the worst, and we’re going to leave that up to you – of the Costume Institute Gala’s red carpet offerings until last: Katy Perry in a glow-in-the-dark dress which came complete with LED bulbs for that, um, special “glow”.
To see what it looked like BEFORE the lights came on, take a look under the jump…
She’s looking just a little more dressed up than most of us would for a day out and about in New York, but then again, if being followed around by photographers all day doesn’t give you an excuse to brush up, we don’t know what would!
Katy Perry is pictured here in a black studded mini dress, and she’s clearly paid some attention to detail too, because the studs are also picked up on her shoes, with the paler strip on the top of her sunglasses completing the look.
