Florence in Florals: Florence Welch at the 2012 NME Awards

Florence Welch at the 2012 NME Awards

Florence is just baiting us now, isn’t she?

Oh, and while we’re on the subject:

Alexa Chung at the NME Awards

So is Alexa.

Is it just us, or does she essentially wear exactly the same outfit (short dress, opaque tights, trench, messy hair…) to EVERYTHING, and get called a “fashion icon” for it? Someone please explain this to us – we feel like if we could understand the appeal of Alexa Chung’s fashion, we’d be close to unravelling the mysteries of the universe…

Alexa Chung wins British Style Award for second year running

Alexa Chung wins British Fashion Award

At last night’s UK Fashion Awards, Alexa Chung won the British Fashion Award for the second year in a row. This is the only title which is the result of a public vote, so while the appeal of Alexa has always been a bit of a mystery to us, if we’re totally honest, we are presumably in the minority with that one, and Alexa is a true icon of British style. We’ll allow you to be the judge of that. For ourselves, we will simply say that she looks very nice here (wearing a Christopher Kane dress and Charlotte Olympia ‘Kitty’ heels) and leave it at that.

What do you think of Alexa’s style? A deserving winner of the British Style Award?

Fashion Police at the Burberry Summer Party: Alexa Chung

Alexa Chung is here for her interview, readers. She’s interviewing for the junior accounts executive position, and as you can see, she’s dressed in a very office appropriate manner: neat little suit, prim, high-collared blouse, shoes which aren’t quite “sensible” – or at least, not in the heel department, anyway – but which somehow manage to create the illusion that they are. Excellent work, Miss Chung! Now, if you could just start out by bringing us some coffee and donuts, that’s a good girl…

So, yes, an outfit that wouldn’t look out of place in any reasonably conservative office in the country. Except Alexa Chung isn’t clocking in for her 9-5, she’s arriving at the Burberry Serpentine Gallery Summer Party. Maybe she could only make it in her lunch hour? Because this outfit doesn’t say “summer” or “party” so much as it says “Do you need any photocopying done before I go?” does it?

Of course, we’re ever so slightly biased here, because Alexa is doomed always to be a mystery to us but we have been seeing more and more of this office-wear-as-fashion lately, so we want to know what you think of it: innocent or guilty?

Celebrity Style on Trial: Alexa Chung

We talk a lot on The Fashion Police about crimes of fashion and the people who commit them, but what about the ones who get it right?

We think we need an icon: a guiding light, someone we can look up to and say, “HER: that’s how it’s done.”

The problem with that, however, is that most of the people commonly granted “icon” status by the fashion world are people who make us scratch our heads and say, “HER? Really?”

And of course, everyone has days when they get it right, and days when they get it oh-so-very wrong. We want to find someone who gets it right more often than wrong, though, and who we can look up to as the Fashion Police’s Fashion Icon, so over the next few days we’re going to take a look at some of the women most commonly hailed as “Icons”, and see what you think of their style.

We’re starting off today with Candidate # 1: Alexa Chung

Now, obviously Karl Lagerfeld loves Alexa, but Uncle Karl… let’s just say his opinion can’t always be taken to be gospel on these things.

This photo is actually a pretty good example of Alexa’s style, which has always confused The Fashion Police. She’s a beautiful woman, obviously, but Alexa’s style is very low-key, casual, sometimes even a bit on the dowdy side, if we may be so bold. Alexa will show up on the red carpet in clothes that the rest of us might wear to the supermarket or office: but she’ll still pull it off. She doesn’t appear to own a comb, and she doesn’t really care what anyone thinks – which actually may be a point in her favour here. Is that ladder in her stockings deliberate or accidental? Alexa probably doesn’t care, and everyone else at this show probably considered adding a ladder to their own stockings, such is the power of Alexa.

We want to grab her by the shoulders and tell her to stand up straight here. A couple of days in Fashion Police Boot Camp would soon sort that out, though.

This photo is another good example of Alexa Chung’s signature style. The Breton stripes, the classic trench… the clumpy shoes, and the vaguely uncomfortable suggestion that she possibly forgot to put on pants. We actually love this look on her, and think she’s at her best when she goes causal, but you, of course, may well disagree.

Here are some more photos of Alexa Chung’s style. Tell us: what do you think? Fashion icon or not?

The Good, The Bad and the Confusing: Kate Bosworth, Rachel Bilson and Alexa Chung at Burberry Prorsum

Kate Bosworth

On paper, it wouldn’t work. On Kate Bosworth, it somehow does.

Rachel Bilson

OK, so “bad” is maybe a bit strong, and we get that it’s freezing right now, but this still looks like Lord Vader’s puffa jacket. Which means that Rachel Bilson has gone over to the Dark Side. Another good one lost!

Alexa Chung

She seems like a nice girl, but you’re never going to make us understand why Alexa Chung is the fashion icon she is to so many people. You’re welcome to try, of course, but we very much doubt you’ll succeed…

Case Closed: Alexa Chung wears YSL’s slashed bermuda shorts

NEW YORK - JUNE 17: TV personality Alexa Chung attends the YSL Belle D'Opium fragrance launch at The YSL Stage on June 17, 2010 in New York City. (Photo by Jason Kempin/Getty Images)

Remember those $1,000 YSL Bermuda shorts we cautioned earlier this month? This is the leather version, as worn by Alexa Chung, who has allowed us to answer the question “Who on earth would wear these?” and to close the case on this mystery.

They’re a little less confusing now we see them being worn, but still, rather Alexa’s bank account (Or YSL’s, as the case may be – this was a party to launch the label’s new fragrance, so the shorts may well have been a freebie) than ours, we say.

What do you think of this look?

Celebrity Style on Trial: Alexa Chung’s menswear-inspired look at the Met Ball

Alexa Chung Met Ball

Although there seems to be widespread agreement within the fashion world that Alexa Chung can do no wrong, menswear-inspired looks can be hard to pull off, which makes us wonder what you think of this Phillip Lim suit, which comes complete with ribbon tie?

It certainly stood out among the much more conventional party dresses on show at this week’s Costume Institute Gala, but did it stand out in a good way or a bad way? One thing’s for sure, and that’s the fact that Alexa looks comfortable and confident in this look, which always goes a long way towards making an outfit work. Has she convinced you that it does?

Fashion Police at the Elle Style Awards

Not just an awards ceremony, but an awards ceremony for STYLE, these images are from last night’s Elle Style Awards, in London.

Our favorite fashion dementor, Kristen Stewart, picked up the Woman of the Year Award, but barely managed to crack a smile at that piece of news, so we’re thinking no more awards for Kristen, who is also grounded until she can improve her attitude, young lady!

Alexa Chung, meanwhile, managed to break out of the short skirt/ankle boots rut she’s been in for a while, but stopped short of combing her hair, Agyness Deyn took recession fashion a little too far by apparently cutting up an old carpet and sticking it to her dress, and the Olsen Twins wore SHRESSES.

Who wins your award for “Most Stylish”, though? Take a look at the gallery below…

Style Stealer: Alexa Chung’s Chanel clogs on an ASOS budget

Ever since Alexa Chung appeared on the cover of UK Vogue’s March issue, one thing was clear: clogs were on the way back “in”.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing, we ask ourselves? Well, we’ve never really been huge fans of the clog, but at the same time, we wouldn’t slap these particular ones in jail either, so you could say we’re on the fence on this one.

What we DEFINITELY wouldn’t do, though, is pay Chanel prices for shoes like this. So it’s a good job we don’t have to, because if we did suddenly decide we couldn’t last one more day without a pair of Alexa-like heeled clogs on our hooves, at least we know ASOS are selling these ones for £85. No, they’re not Chanel, and nor do they look it, but if you really like this look, at least they’ll save you a bit of money.
