Style Trial: Prada’s ‘Smoking’ Sandals

Prada 'Smoking' sandals

Resisting the temptation to make a bad joke about these shoes being “smoking hot”, the question we really want to ask you here is, well, ARE these shoes smoking hot? They’re by Prada, they’re £590 (which seems just a little high for what we’d term a “novelty” shoe, but anyway…) and, as we’re sure you can see for yourselves, they feature a red lipsticked mouth, puffing away on a cigarette. Cute.

It’s been a long time since we’ve viewed smoking as stylish, and an even longer time since we’ve viewed cigarettes as something we want near our toes (and by that, we mean “we’ve never wanted cigarettes near our toes, but if you do, more power to you…) but we know some of our readers enjoy the odd smoke, so what do you think? Would you buy these? Would you wear them? Or are they approaching Crime of Fashion territory?

100% fashion crime. As if smoking wasn’t bad enough, here’s Prada trying to bring it back into glamour? Why not just velcro some hand grenades on the toes?

These look like a walking ad for cigarettes- Virginia Slims maybe (don’t really know the brands, but that one sticks in my head). Would I wear them? I guess the real question for me is; Do I want to look like a walking advertisement for cigarettes? The answer (which I think should be obvious) is no. Absolutely not. FAIL in the most unfashionable way. Way to put some trash on top of your class Prada. SMH.

Well, actually I think they are cute-in-a-funny-way BUT far too (unreasonably) expensive for being of such kind. I could think of many other “cute in a funny way” shoes to wear, if I really wanted to. And this comment is coming from a smoker who otherwise wouldn’t mind sporting them.

Sex experts will tell you that all fetish is driven by taboo. The taboo on smoking is exactly what they are counting on to drive people wild – pro and con – and hype their shoe. And some will pay the big bucks to make a ‘statement’ and be ‘edgy’.

Why are high heels the most common fetish, then? They aren’t taboo. In formal situations, most women wear heels. It’s a pain to even find formal flat shoes.

I DETEST these shoes, just as I DETEST cigarette-smoking.
It looks to me like Miuccia ( like Italian Vogue and other European fashion magazines) has got round the ban on advertising cigarettes (has she been paid to do so?) by disguising them as ever-so-desirable fashion items.
Even Carine Roitfeld now says she wishes she hadn’t featured cigarette-smoking in so many French Vogue fashion spreads.
But Miuccia? Cynicism. That’s what it’s all about.

Because who doesn’t want a pair of full red lips smoking a cigarette on your feet.
