Style Trial | Julianne Moore’s hairy dress (plus more photos from the Cannes Film Festival)

The Cannes Film Festival has been underway for a week now, and has presented us with the usual feast of fashion. Gorgeous gown, elegant coiffures, a flashback to the golden age of glamour: so far, so very stylish.

The Cannes Film Festival has also, however, brought us this dress from Julianne Moore. We need to talk about this dress.

We’ve dubbed it “The Hairy Dress”, because that was what instantly sprang to mind when we first saw the photos. Actually, though, it’s made from feathers: and Chanel feathers, at that.

The gown has a high neck, a short train, and a thick band around the waist to accommodate the pockets. We do love a dress with pockets, we must admit, but do YOU love this dress: that’s what we want to know? We think it has a certain old-fashioned glamour to it, and the colours work wonderfully with Julianne’s skin and hair colour: it’s also very much a statement dress, and the Cannes Film Festival is most definitely the place to make a statement.

What do you think? Do you love it? Do you hate it? Is it a crime of fashion, or should it be awarded a gold star? Cast your vote in the comments section below, and when you’re done with that, click through for a few more photos from Cannes this year!

I dislike it. Not actually a crime of fashion, but it just looks creepy to me. And I REALLY don’t like the pockets! Pockets on a suit, yes, but a visible pocket pouch across the hips on a formal evening dress?–no. This is not a hoodie! Add to that the feather ridge down the back which gives me even more of the creeps, and I find this piece a “fail”. I also feel the design “chops up” her figure and I dislike the color of the undergarment–but at least there is a partial one! However,I am not a fan of Uncle Karl anyway so maybe I am prejudiced.

I wouldn’t have minded the dress if it had not been for those pockets. They just totally ruin it for me (and I usually looooove pockets)

I think my biggest beef with this dress is that she doesn’t have much of a shape in it.

Cheryl Cole Does seem to be sporting only one leg, I cannot see even a trace/shadow of her other appendage? Does wearing this dress require limb-detachment?

Take a flesh-toned t-shirt, make it floor length, add another band of t-shirt fabric around the tush, spray with adhesive, throw turkey feathers all over it. Sounds like a plan.

The too-short hem on Frieda Pinto’s dress cheapens it — especially with the long-toed gold shoes sticking out. Makes it look like the dress didn’t quite fit.

It’s absolutely hideous but Julianne is still adorable in it. Maybe this is her way of proving she can still look gorgeous while wearing a… feathery… nude… thing…
