Style on Trial: Pointelle ruffle bib jumper from Miss Selfridge

When we first spotted this Miss Selfridge sweater, we had an instant, strong reaction to it.  And we’re not the only ones: as we’ve policed the Internet this week, we’ve found that quite a few of our fellow bloggers have strong feelings about this sweater, too, but their feelings are the absolute opposite of ours – or at least some of them are.

Clearly then, this is a sweater which inspires a love/hate reaction in many of the people who see it, so without telling you which side of that fence we fall on, we thought we’d put the question to you, readers: what do you think of this sweater? Do you love it or hate it, and why?

It’s got navy/cream/red, ruffles, a bow, and a vintage feel, all things of which I am normally a fan, but somehow I’m not feeling the love for this one. It’s just plain ungraceful looking; it’s too fussy and cobbled together. I can’t help but think that it wants to be some sort of franken-clothing when it grows up (pinafore-sweater-bowtie, any anyone?) Also, it looks cheaply made even in it’s display shot, which is never a good thing.

Hate it! Too frilly and the bow is ridiculous.

the red bow pushed it from “whimsically ruffled” into “way too twee” for me..coulda been a contender

I would like to see what it looks like on a person. I’m stuck on the fence for this one.

I think it’s adorable, but only on someone young, very slender and not gifted in the bosom department.

I think i like it except for the red around the neck. the red bow is ok but the neck should be the same navy.

I quite like it. I don’t even hate the bow, though it probably would look better without it. And if the ruffle element was toned down a tad. Otherwise, it’s pretty cute.

cheap cheap cheap. It looks like someone has stuck some dishclothes onto a plain jersey top. I mean what feel is this going for? unless somewhere the target demographic for this top is a young flat chested girl who dribbles constantly and needs something to wipe it up with at close proximity I think its just a nasty case of faux vintage imitation.

No one else thought ‘dress like a toddler day”?? All this needs is those tights with the ruffles on the butt to complete the look.

As soon as I saw it I went ‘woaurgh!’ and made the sort of face you do when you’ve bitten into a peach and seen maggots: i.e. let the stuff on your tongue drop out of your mouth before the serious spitting starts.

Little Lord Fauntleroy is now wearing is sailor suit. Woaurgh.

Just seems kind of juvenile to me.

It would be cuter with less ruffles.

I’d never be caught dead in this. It reminds me of a nightgown I wore as a 4 yr old back in the 80s.

I don’t really like it…it’s too over the top. Take away some of the ruffles and make the around the neck bit navy and it could look nice.

I really want to like it. Maybe if it was only two rows of ruffles it would be better.

I think it’d be better if it had a v-neck and no red trim/bow. Maybe with a button, like a Henley.

    Less ruffles. Definitely less ruffles.
I agree with the comments above about ‘slender’ and ‘not gifted in the bosom department’..
    Got it in one, miss.

They did a black version at the end of last year, which I tried on and really wanted to love. But there’s too much going on with the frills. If you’ve got quite a large chest (i have) than the cut is just plain unflattering. But, I prefer it in navy, and might be tempted to go back and see if this is somehow more flattering.
