Style on Trial: denim short dungarees

River Island mid wash denim dungareesDenim dungaree shorts.  That takes us back.  To about 1990 when our sister had a pair of these.  She was 9.  Is this the next step after the popularity of jumpsuits?  Are dungarees about to have a resurgence?  We hope not.

So is this just a case of dressing like a toddler, or could a grown woman actually pull these off?  River Island certainly seem to think so.  If you would wear these, tell us how and where you would wear them.  You can buy them for £40 at River Island.

I had a very similar skirt (dungaree from the waist up, short flowery skirt from the waist down), which I have loved and worn every summer from 1996 to about 3 years ago when it suddenly didn’t feel right anymore to be dressed like that (I was 34 then).

I would have gotten rid of shorts like these many years sooner – if I had bought them at all. I think you can pull this look off until your early 20s maybe. But someday it starts looking ridiculous – just like the woman I once saw. She was in her 50s and had braided pigtails…

I would wear those. . . on a farm. And that’s it. No where else. EVER. Except for a costume party or something.

No, these would not work on a farm. On a farm, you want proper jeans, or overalls. That being said, if these were actual overalls, I’d love them. but not as shorts.

These worked for a second in my head . . . then it was gone.

i SORT of like it (im college-aged), but it would need to be very carefully styled…not entirely sure how, though.

With ribbed tights or thick socks, classic Doc’s or Gettagrips and a hoodie like I did back in 1990 I presume 😉 But I wouldn’t wear them with just a bra these days. I would also like to drop fifteen kilos before, so it’s just not going to happen.

I’d wear them, at home, meeting my friends. I might put them with otherwise horrendously coloured/patterned tights/leggings, maybe a quirky top. Some days I pretend to be normal, some days I recapture my inner teenager (at 26 not so long ago), and some days I just really want dungaree shorts.
