Style on Trial: Balmain one-shoulder ruffle sequin mini dress

Balmain-sequin-dress

This dress has been catching our eye at Louisa Via Roma for a couple of weeks now, and, of course, that's exactly what it's supposed to do. But is this dress a Crime of Fashion, we wonder?

The Case for the Prosecution: For reasons the prosecution can't quite put their fingers on, there's something vaguely reptilian about this dress. And the huge ruffle on the shoulder makes it look like something the Lizard Queen would wear in some kind of freaky sci-fi movie in which alien reptiles come to earth, wearing Balmain.

The Case for the Defence: It's a statement-making, eye-catching extravaganza that no one will be able to ignore. Ever.

What do you think, readers? Do you think Balmain's sequin ruffle dress should be convicted or acquitted of committing crimes of fashion?

This dress is CLEARLY not for everyone, but someone like Heidi Klum could rock it.

I would wear this as a part of a clown costume for Halloween. With huge pumps and massive runway hair..(lol)

Idk, I mean, I keep seeing it pop up everywhere, and it’s one of those dresses that grows on you. But the ruffle is so… ugh! If only they hadn’t put on the shoulder ruffle, I’d totally wear it.
And this is a fairly irrelevant comment, but i can’t get over how skinny the model’s arms are. It’s distracting O.O

I like the silhouette, and i think that if this dress wasn’t as ostentatious with all the glitz and if the ruffle didn’t pop up as much that it would be a great dress… think of it in a solid color.

It reminds me of drag queens. that’s not good. It also reminds me of my mom’s majorette outfit when she was a baton twirler.

The dress take it or leave it, my main concern is for the health of the model or the sanity of the photo-shopper. Yikes. seriously what is going on with her arm?

I love the colour and I’m pretty tolerant of sequins, even all-over sequins – but that ruffle ruins the whole thing.

I think, with some alterations, I might like it.
I’d start by removing the ruffle, and the one long sleeve, make it sort of a sleek one-shoulder thing, then make it about 4-6 inches longer, and I’d so wear it for a dress-up kind of occasion.

Wow – second post in as many days and looks like I am gonna be the controversial one, I love it, not a huge fan of the one sleeve anything normally, its so all about Balmain right now and how ridiculously expensive it is, but Rhianna could rock it totally

I don’t like how the top starts off with a diagonal pattern, and then it levels off at the skirt. If it kept the diagonal feel to it the entire way, I think I’d like it.
As it is, it just feels lopsided. That ruffle isn’t helping.

I dont know how i feel about it. The one shoulder i absolutely love, but somethng about it…maybe the stripes in it…I dont know. I would try rocking it. I think people who are curvy should wear it. I can totally see Kim Kardashian wearing this or Beyonce.
