Stiletto heels: how high is too high?

Dsqaured2_high_heels

Here at The Fashion Police, our general rule of thumb foot is that when it comes to high heels, the higher the better. And we’ll never say "no" to a bit of a platform either. But you have to draw the line somewhere, of course, and our question for you today, readers is: where do you draw that line?

Take these stilettos by dSquared2, for instance. That heel is 5.5" inches high, and while the correspondingly high platform means that you won’t be thrown off balance quite as much as you would without it, these will still give you a pretty good height boost, and cause people to ask how on earth you can walk in them all day long.

Could you walk in them? And, just as importantly, would you want to? What’s your limit when it comes to high heels? We tend to stop at around 4", but what about the rest of you?

Ooooh! Good question… I always say stop at 4″ lest you look like a streetwalker, but my absolute favorite green heels are 5.5″ with a platformed sole!! And I wear them EVERYWHERE! People are always wondering, and sometimes I do myself! I see them sitting there in the closet, and I think they look sooo uncomfy, but then I slip them on and they just pull my funky ethnic outfits together so well. And somehow they don’t bother me at all! I may slip them off at my earliest convenience at a friends house, or while riding in a car (it’s hard to sit in cars in stilletos), but in the end I always thank the stilleto saints for my beautiful heels… I am so torn when it comes to stilletos, really I am.

Unfortunately I walk like a man in drag in heels. I buy them, but only to look at! Occasionally my sisters will borrow them (we are so lucky being the same size – wardrobes are constantly rotated!) and I can enjoy seeing my beautiful shoes on a real person. The highest heels I own are about 4″ so I guess that’d be my limit.

Being a ballerina, I can walk in pretty much any heels, and I really love wearing them, the higher the better!
However, being 5’11” if I wear heels over 4″ I’m taller than my boyfriend and I HATE that, so I guess 4″ is where I stop.

4″ is about tops for me, but 4 1/2″ is so close that I usually don’t mind. I have gotten wobbly in 4″ so maybe I shouldn’t even be wearing that…

I’m going to have to agree with everyone else here. 4″ is where I draw the line. Anything else just seems very stripper-esque to me. And I like my 4 inchers with a bit of a platform on them too, makes them way more comfortable.
    What a great question!

    Must have those shoes now…..
I love the look of heels, totally addicted. I say the higher the better, like Lee said, if worn with the right outfit you won’t look like a stripper. Also you won’t look like a stripper as long as your 5+ inch heels aren’t clear. šŸ™‚

My feet can barely stand 3.5″, so that’s about the line for me… I’m a ballroom dancer, so I try not to mangle my feet more than they already are.

Four inches is OK and four and a half is tolerable but five inches is only for going to a restaurant and sitting down. It depends what you are doing in the shoes, if the heel is very thick and solid it will be OK at five inches but if it is spindly it could kill you. šŸ™‚

3 inches for work/anywhere involving a bit of walking, 4 inches for a tottery night out with alcohol to numb the inevitable pain and 4.5 for taxitorestaurantotaxi šŸ™‚ Any higher and I can’t walk – I can barely manage it in 4.5!

I don’t think I own a pair higher than 4 inches. But WOULD I wear higher? Hell yeah! Being only 5 feet tall, I put my feet through a lot to be taller, but they can take it. šŸ˜‰

My highest pair is 3,5″, but my comfortable height ends at 3″. There are days when I just can’t walk in heels at all. I know it’s the practice that makes you walk in any heel, yet still there aren’t too many occasions to get into my heels really. Or would you walk around the campus in peeptoes…?!

a discussion after my own heart…just spent the entire saturday evening and early sunday morn at my grad party in 3.5-4″ish stilleto heels, dancing…my feet are still feel like i’m walking on those heels hours later with 3 countable blisters…so i think i’ll never venture beyond 4″…EVER

  • Too high. 4 inches is the max. 3-4 inches still look sexy. 5 inches is sexy but most woman look ridiculous walking in them. If you just sit there with them decorating your legs then that might be OK. Anything over 5 is just cartoonish. Stripper heels are not sexy.

I have 3″ heels that I only occasionally totter around in. My comfortable “heels” are 1 1/2″, I suppose anything under 3″ would be fine but if I wear higher than 3″ my hips self-dislocate (really!) which makes walking much more uncomfortable than just wearing the heels.

I always wear heels.. all mine are 4″ to 5.5″. In fact, I get a sharp pain above my heel if I try to go much lower than 4″. So, I just always wear them.

In my opinion, I think the higher the better and as Lee said, if worn with the right outfit you won’t look like a stripper.

I have a pair of 5 inch heels – the Jessica Simpson “Parigi” pumps. Even with a 1 inch platform they are very difficult to walk any distance in. So sad too, becuase by my standards, they were expensive!! So sometimes I will wear them but I have to bring a different pair of shoes to change into whenever I have to do a bit of walking. Seems kind of ridiculous.

I can handle 3.5 to 4 inch heels quite well.

I just want to say that the absolute best invention ever is the Rollable Shoes

I found these in Vegas and love them. They take up a bit of space in my purse, but if I don’t carry the tote bag it isn’t that bad and well worth it!

i wear 5 inch heels every day im only 5’1″ so i feel like they dont make me look so short i look “normal” sized i walked around the university of Puerto Rico with them for 4 years and I got used to them. Now i wear them everyday to work. I got so used to them that when I put on my running shoes in the morning they feel funny.

I’m 6 foot 2 and I just bought a pair of Vera Wang cheetah print 4 inchers for myself…I’m taking them home over the holidays and anticipating a lot of use out of them. I wouldn’t wear them to schools teaching and doing a lot of standing/walking (I have 1 inchers and 2 inchers for that…haven’t worn my flats in forever actually) but I LOVE HEELS even with how tall I am! I can’t wait to wear these puppies out…haven’t had a chance yet šŸ™‚

Lol! My mom doesn’t let me wear heels (I’m 16) so when I could I went out with a friend to a mall and got some. Long story short, my first ever pair of stilettos are 5″5, which means the one time I wore them I looked like a cowboy with my knees spread appart. I’m still going to learn to walk in them, but maybe try some platforms first, no?;)

Iā€™m a decided fetishist after my first youth, so Iā€™m acustomed to wear heels in many times a dat when Iā€™m alone at home ( Inside the closet), my USA size is 11, my EU size is 43, and my China size is 44. Because my long practice I can drive easely up to 6ā€³ā€, but I normally buy 6.5ā€³ and 7ā€³ so I put inside a hidden slantig pad about 1/2ā€³ or 1ā€³, by this way I can walk and dance during hours without any pane or harm. I can do this because I live in a farm, with a relative blind person, so I can walk far away without problem by my farm paved trails and around my big house there.

I wear five inch heels without a platform every day to an art gallery I work in. I have no problems with five invh heels as long as they fit perfectly. If I try 5.5 inch heels I can go about three hours before the pain gets too much, and I have some six inch heels with a small platform that are super painful after an hour but I wear them when I want to look really great for a date or evening out. I try not to walk far or stand in them very long as the pain in the balls of my feet and my toes getting squished is beyond painful… wendy
