Shapeless or stylish? Marc by Marc Jacobs striped cotton dress

It’s fair to say that The Fashion Police are fans of blue and white stripes, and even zebra stripes can be acceptable on the right garment. But on this particular dress we’re undecided.

To begin with, the “fantasy” stripes, combined with the curved cut, counter any structure the dress might originally have had. And then there’s the fact that anything that can make a mannequin look four sizes larger is a style crime from the offset!

But, The Fashion Police believe that on the right person (with the right legs!) there’s a chance – a slim one, perhaps – that this dress could look charmingly chic.

So what do you think? Could you pull this look off? If so you can purchase the striped cotton dress by Marc by Marc Jacobs for €195,00.

It might work with a nice belt, bare legs and high heels, but that’s a big risk to take at that price!

I wonder which celebrity will turn up in it!

I think in films of the 50s/60s, when a female character had to be portrayed as insane and resident at an asylum where she’d be dressed in clothes that were easy to get on and off with minimal fighting and tearing, this would be one of her wardrobe essentials (usually teamed with soft flat mules or plimsoles).

This is another dress that I’m pretty sure I bought at the Judy’s in Ridgmar Mall in 1984. Whether I pulled it off is certainly open to question; I was tall and thin then, which I think you’d have to be to look good in it, but I had little style and less confidence.

    I really like this!
It does have a little bit of asymmetrical seaming, which gives it a little shape.
You could also wear it with like a blazer over it, which would give it more of a shape also.

I think this could constitute daylight robbery. It costs 195 pounds to buy something that you could probably find at Forever 21 for less than $20! Heck, if you were willing to do some digging, I bet you could find a similar, authentic ’80s treasure at your local Goodwill for less than $5.

Without seeing it in context on an actual person it looks like an all-in-one sleep suit for a baby!
