Return of the skort: denim skirt/shorts from Karmaloop

Skorts

It used to be the case that skorts (skirt in front, shorts in back – sort of like a reverse mullet) were the summer equivalent of "mom jeans" – the type of garment that was only ever worn by … well, by the kind of people who wear mom jeans, basically.

But the times, they are a-changing, and now Karmaloop are selling skorts too. Now, in fairness to the skorts shown above, they're one of the least skort-like pairs we've seen, looking much more like an actual skirt than many other pairs. But would you wear skorts? If you would, these ones are $88 and you can buy them here.

I owned a pair back in the 90’s when I was in elementary school, part of our uniform.
I can safely say that no, I would not ever wear them.

I used to wear them back in the 80s. When I was 7 or 8.

Ahem. I used to flap about in them back in the 1990s, when I was neither a child nor press-ganged into wearing them.
I knew them as short “culottes” and loved my black & white flowery pair. Was I tricked by the French name into mom-jean territory?

I used to wear culottes as a child (early 90s) and quite liked them. As with everything, I suppose execution is key – the ones in the picture don’t look that bad to me.

Just to clarify: culottes = very wide-leg shorts, that look like a skirt. Skort = normal shorts with a “skirt” at the front, so when viewed from the back they’ll look *exactly like shorts*, but from the front, like a skirt. Culottes mostly look like a skirt however you look at them.
I think this particular pair has muddied the waters here, though, because like I said in the post, they look a lot more like culottes than a “skort” to me. So maybe just creative naming from Karmaloop 🙂

I believe these are culottes because they are visibly shorts from the front and back (no flap here). I don’t mind these ones too much, but I LOATHE the shoes they have been paired with in the picture!!

I have a skort, but they look like a skirt all the way around. I didn’t realize that they had shorts inside till i tried them on.

I would consider these culottes, and can’t imagine why I’d wear them, I’ll stick to regular skirts or shorts.

I’m actually wearing a skort RIGHT NOW. It’s this one:

I have two different skorts, but both are basically skirts with built in wind insurance 🙂 I love them in the summer!

skorts are lame. period. you wanna feel like a 6 year old when you are 35 – it’s fine by me – but you won’t catch me feeling like it!

Hmmm. I remember thinking culottes (which is what we called skorts back then) were the coolest thing EVER when I was 12. I always wore shorts under my skirts otherwise, so I could play without worrying about flashing my undies to the whole school yard.
Now? Well I must say I’m swayed by Kel’s skort (which really seems more like a skirt with built in shorts than an actual skort — but in any case is quite cute) but I guess I’ve gotten more utilitarian as I’ve aged. Now if I’m participating in activities where a skirt would be a liablity (biking or other sports) I just wear shorts or capris or long pants, depending on the weather.

They remind me too much of my 5th grade uniform. I couldn’t wear them even if they were cute.

I wear skorts, but, that’s because I’m in a scouting group. They’re part of the uniform. ^^”

…I’m too young to be on this site, aren’t I?

Everyone’s saying they wore these in the 80s and the 90s, I wore then in the early 2000s in elementary school. It was kind’ve the thing you wore to be a tomboy, and hey, I really enjoyed them. They were good for me to wear because I was an active kid, meaning I WANTED to wear skirts, but they’d always go up, so my mum got me skorts.
    Heh, I wouldn’t wear them anymore, maybe, I mean I dunno, I can’t decide…
