Fashion Police at the MET Costume Institute Gala 2014

Last night saw fashion’s elite assemble on the red carpet for the Charles James: Beyond Fashion’ Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art: or “the MET Costume Institute Gala”, as we’ll be calling it for the sake of simplicity. The MET Gala is our favourite red carpet event: it’s not quite “fancy dress”, but the themed nature of the evening allows celebrities and designers to give free reign to their imaginations, so, unlike the Oscars, say, which have become somewhat dull in recent years, the MET Costume Institute Gala provides us with plenty of outrageous and inventive outfits to feast our eyes upon.

Because celebrities have the “dressing to a theme” excuse, it’s hard to accuse any of them of committing crimes of fashion for this event: it would be a little bit arresting someone for their Halloween costume (although don’t think we haven’t considered it…) Nevertheless, we’ve been getting lots of tweets on the subject of “Best Dressed at the Met Costume Institute Gala”, and note with interest the #kristenstewartbestdressed hash tag which some of you have been using in a bid to convince us to crow Kristen as Queen of the MET.

Should we, though? You’ll find photos from last night’s gala below: take a look and don’t forget to tell us what you think of them all. Most importantly: who do YOU think should win Best Dressed?

Oh, and our pick? Karen Elson:

    Very Veronique

I though Karolina Kurkova looled amazing (but I may be partial to her cause she’s Czech) and I really liked Elizabeth Olsen’s shoes. As for Kristen Steward’s outfit… Huh? I don’t really understand the appeal.

Yep, that’s the Death Star on Kirsten Dunst’s dress. 🙂 And I think it’s very fitting as the gala took place on May the 4th. (“May the Force…” 😉 )

definitely Dita von Teese with Karolina Kurkova and Karen Elson tied for second. for me, these three (and their designers) best captured Charles James, the designer the exhibition was about.

Can i add that i think in general Zac Posen was the best of the night, all the women he dressed looked amazing, and he himself wore a robe/cape!

Several of these dresses look like they’re the wrong size. I like Claire Danes’ dress, though.

I really liked Sara Jessica’s dress tho I really don’t care for her usually. And I thought Charlize Theron looked really wonderful. So classy. Along the classy lines, Katie Couric looked true Gala. Unlike many others, I really liked Lupita’s outfit. Perhaps not quite the right venue for it but I saw another more flattering pic of it. She looked every inch the African Princess and we can use more of those! I suppose my final vote goes to Charlize as number one, Sara J as number two and Lupita as number one risk taker.

I forgot to add that I thought every piece by Chanel was a disaster! Now I am waiting to be stoned by everyone. I went through all the pics on Style last night.

Totally agree that either Karen or Karolina were fabulous! I tend to like the “ball gown” type attire for this event. Sarah Jessica was lovely; Katie Couric; so many! But no – Kristen Stewart was definitely NOT the best!

    Fabulous Fabulous dresses.

Nueve shoes gave Karolina the award for best dress, its such a stylish statement piece, fitting for such an artistic event.

Naomi Campbel seems to have forgotten her bra size, ruining what would have been a good look.

I would love to style Maggie Gyllenhaal, classic case of a bad dress on a good person.

Katie Holmes should look like a goddess in a canary yellow gown and dark hair, but she just looks uncomfortable…shame

And as for Cara Delevingne, she epitomises the rebellious cousin at a wedding, smoking behind the loos, and it works..Rock on Chick!
