Meadham Kirchhoff for Topshop | The Verdict

The Meadham Kirchhoff for Topshop collection launched online this morning, and we’re now considering declaring a State of Style Emergency. Seriously: this isn’t a brand we’d have expected to come up with anything even remotely “ordinary”, but given that this is a high street collection, aimed at the people who wander into Topshop during their lunch hour, we have to admit that some of it surprised even our more hardened officers. For instance:

Meahham Kirchhoff for Topshop red PVC frill playsuit and shorts

A red PVC frill playsuit (£150) and matching red PVC shorts (£100). We’re just going to say it: these look more like the kind of thing you’d see in a more, er, specialist store than Topshop. Are people buying these to wear in the bedroom? Because we really can’t imagine where else you could wear something like this, and the fact is, people ARE buying them: the playsuit is already sold out, and the shorts are headed that way.

Then there’s the shoes:

These are creative, whimsical, and have a real “psychedelic fairytale” feel to them, so if that’s your jam, you’ll love them. They’re awesome to look at (And will be perfect with that playsuit. Ahem.), but we’re guessing they might not be the easiest things in the world to wear. Possibly.

There’s also a lot of Mongolian sheepskin:

The gilet  is £600 and sold out. The scarf is £250 and still available – probably not for long, though.

Finally, and to end on a positive note, we DO love the nightwear:

Actually, we REALLY love the nightwear, and it’s much more affordably priced than many of the other items, so we know what WE’D be buying if we had to choose something from this selection.

What about you, though? What do you think of the Meadham Kirchhoff collection for Topshop? Did you buy anything? Are you planning to? You can view the full collection at the Topshop website: don’t forget to come back and deliver your verdict, though!

The only logical explanation I can think of for any of these items selling out so quickly is that they’re being bought in bulk by people who plan to re-sell them on eBay for a ridiculous profit, to die hard Meadham Kirchhoff fans. That is the only explanation I am willing to accept, if only so I can live the next few weeks not worrying about the high-street fashion scene taking a most unexpected, & quite frankly terrifying, turn.

I’m not saying there is anything wrong with clothes that aren’t mainstream. I’m just saying clothes that aren’t mainstream are, by definition, not appealing to the majority of people, & that is for a REASON (cf. bright PVC that you, rightfully, suggested would be more appropriate at an adults’ store).

I’d put the shoes in a display cabinet, they fascinate me so much, but *what* is that playsuit? It looks strangely perverted, sort of “housemaid meets diaper baby”.
