Maison Martin Margiela for H&M: what do you think?

Maison Martin Margiela for H&M:

As we’re sure most of you are aware, this week saw the launch of Maison Martin Margiela’s capsule collection for H&M.

Now, this was an interesting one for us, not just because Margiela is one of our all-time favourite fashion criminals (in fact, if Margiela himself was still designing for the brand, he’d be like The Godfather of the fashion crime ring which currently has a stranglehold on style), but because the very avant-garde style of this brand is so very different from the kind of thing the H&M demographic is used to. Despite being a fashionista favourite, beloved of the type of people who care deeply about being “edgy”, Margiela doesn’t have the mainstream popularity of some of the other labels H&M have collaborated with recently, either: even your granny has probably heard of Versace, but she’s probably not quite as familiar with the house of Margiela. (Unless your granny is way edgy, of course, in which case, more power to her…)

Despite all of this, the collection seems to be selling well, and many pieces are already sold out online, which makes us wonder if the streets will soon be filled with people who all look a bit like Lady Gaga. In the meantime, we’re keen to hear your thoughts on this collection, which sees the re-issue of some classic Margiela designs. Did you buy anything?

I love the shoes!! The clothes, not so much.

I’d have to see the shoes on a foot to really decide how I feel about them… but they are definitely less awful than the clothes! Yuck!

Such a hit and miss designer, pieces like the jackets with inverted lapels, the waistcoat with belts, the denim jacket with the fashion side of the fabric on the inside I really like, if not clever they’re at least something I’d wear, but when it comes to something like the fusion of two dresses it kind of looks like someones child has found their way into the house and started having a play on the sewing machine and one of the soooo edgy people there has said ‘meh, it’ll sell’. This said I’d bloody love that denim jacket, like really love it hehe 😀

I love the shoes, but if I see anything else on an actual person (perhaps those… interesting jeans) I will be laughing my socks of!

I love it. I like their whole concept of deconstructing fashion, even though, according to me, they definitely get trapped in their own thing sometimes – which can lead to some quite hideous results like that one item that looks more like a mattress than a coat… But in general, really love it, love the see-through plastic heels, love the leather handbag with the “glove” strap, love the lingerie body. It’s inventive, brings something refreshing (especially after the kitsch overload collection w/ Anna dello Russo…), plays with the commonly accepted fashion rules, yet still finds a way to keep those clear lines, beautiful cuts, those brilliant contrasts in volume, and finesse of garment. One of H&M’s best capsule collections in a looooong time in my opinion! 🙂
