Long or Short? Bettie Page’s Captain dress, as seen on Holly Madison

Bettie Page’s ‘Captain’ dress has been available for a while now, and is a Fashion Police favourite: in fact, if we ever launch a nautical division*, this dress will be part of the uniform of its officers.

Holly Madison obviously likes the dress too, as she was spotted wearing it earlier this month. Not only is Holly wearing the dress, however, she’s also butchered the dress, hacking several inches off the hemline to create this mini version, just as Blair did on Gossip Girl that time.

Is the change for the better or for the worse, though? Well, that’s what we want you to tell us. Do you prefer Holly’s shortened version, Bettie Page’s original version, or neither? And why?

(*Note to Self: launch nautical division)

It’s all about how you style it. I love the original, but it wouldn’t work with my body-type. Blair’s worked as well. With her style it still wasd classy. Holly’s? Not so much. She pushes the “sexy” to hard and it lost all of the hint, which makes the pin up style so great.

It looks far better with the longer length – a wiggle dress is for curves, not to show off thighs. Cutting the hem so high just makes it look cheap.

I’d go with the long version. The short version looks a bit.. cheap, costume-y.

I love the long version. It silhouettes the body, and implied ‘sex appeal’ is much better the explicit ‘sex appeal’.

I prefer the long one, more classy. Its already sexy enough with the tight bodice, showing off and elongating the body shape. The short version looks too in-the-face cheap and costume-y (totally agreed with Cookie!)

Long. The short one looks like a costume for some sexy times… 🙂

Can I go with “middle”? I think the short is way too short, but I think the dress would work better if it was cut just above or on the knees, instead of that little tail under her knees..

Agreed 🙂 That’s where I’d want to wear it!

I like both versions but would find the ‘long’ hard to walk in! I agree with Panthera, if it was knee length it would be perfect!

If you ever launch a nautical division and this is the uniform I’ll be putting in for a transfer!!

    (And long, please!)

Long! I love my sailor dress, but it’s more of a long shirt, so I don’t wear it much. Hell, the way it’s going, it’ll likely end up my sister’s, since she looks better in it.

I have to go for long. I agree with what most said.. When you take away the length.. It messes up the original sillhouette.. Looks really cheap.. Although knee length would probably work well as well.

I agree that the long version is classier. I think the short is cute, too, but I feel like if you’re going for the 50’s pin-up look, really go for it! Embrace Bettie Paige’s original!

Quite frankly, the longer version is much sexier than the shorter version. The long one is very classy and I would wear it in a heartbeat. The short one looks like something you would wear for role playing in the bedroom.
