Style on Trial: Would you wear jodhpurs?

Jodhpurs When I was a little girl, I used to do a lot of horse riding. Now, I suspect this probably doesn’t need to be said, but for the benefit of those of you who aren’t familiar with the equine world, modern riders don’t wear jodhpurs like these: they wear jodhpurs that are a lot like very thick leggings, with reinforced bits at the knee. Anyway, one year my grandparents went on holiday and came back telling me that they had found a pair of jodhpurs and had bought them for me. You can imagine my excitement … until I opened the bag and found a pair of trousers almost exactly like these (although not "sateen", obviously).

To this day, we have no idea how my grandparents managed to hunt down a pair of jodhpurs from the 1940s. What I do know, though, is that even my eleven-year-old self knew that this? Was most definitely not a good look. Oh hell, no. Who wants to make their thighs look bigger than they are, after all?

Well, some people do, apparently, because Balenciaga sent their models down the catwalk in old-fashioned jodhpurs earlier this year, and the high street was quick to jump on the bandwagon, with ASOS producing these sateen jodhpurs for £28.

My question to you: would you wear them?

I normally hate jodhpurs (even the name is ugly) as they look like one is wearing, oh, boats or shopping bags or undeveloped wings on your thighs. HOWEVER, and i think I might be going crazy, but I actually think that they are looking a bit cute in that picture, and I actually might wear them with a little cropped jacket. . .

I wear the black legging like johpurs without the weird flaps or anything 🙂
They look really weird and stupid! If I wore them I would wear a long top or dress over the flaps XD

When I was a kid, I rode and yes, these were the kind of jodhpurs we had, and that was the 1960s. I wore the last pair I had (off the horse) into the 1980s. I loved them. I would kill for a pair now, which is how I found your site … I am always looking. Actually, it is a great look … if it wasn’t, you wouldn’t see so many fabulous women in film (think Kate Hepburn, Bette Davis, Norma Shearer, etc.) in them. If anyone knows where I can find a pair … let me know at samkatznyc@gmail.com — thanks! I’m a size 2 to 6, depending upon the cut … !!!

I would absolutely wear jodhpurs! I do now, owning a nice German pair from the 40s. I’m always looking for other ones too. I’m a vintage clothing dealer and I like to look the part. And they are comfortable and cool. Hips look bigger? I don’t think so! They make you look slimmer if in the right size! The one pictured don’t look so hot…too stiff.
