Style on Trial: Dresses over jeans, a la Jennifer Love Hewitt in Marc Jacobs

Jennifer_love_hewitt

What does everyone think of dresses-over-jeans? It’s one of those looks The Fashion Police would love to love, but which always makes us look slightly deranged every time we’ve tried it. This confuses us, because we’ve seen other people manage to pull off the dresses-over-jeans look perfectly well, so we’ll be interested to hear your views.

Case in point: Jennifer Love Hewitt, seen here wearing Marc Jacobs’ clover jacquard dress over a pair of skinny jeans. We reckon this is a tough dress to wear, because of its close relationship to maternity wear, but we think Jennifer actually looks quite cute here. What do you think? Do you wear dresses over jeans? Would you?

I love to wear dresses over jeans. However, I do have rules on how to pull off the look:
    1. Only skinny jeans in either dark blue or black.
    2. The dress must be above the knee.
    3. The dress cannot have any sequins, glitter (not that I own any glittery dresses) or anything resembling a going-out dress.

I think dresses need to be a lot more casual then that one in order to work with jeans….
I usually stick to stretchy lyrca/cotton mixes, and I tend to hike up the dresses a little as well…
Also, that dress is way to long to work as well…
I think the main problem with that dress is that its too poofy to work over jeans, and really, isn’t that style more suited for BABIES!?!

I agree, the dress is too long, poofy and not THAT casual for the jeans.. I have to say that I´ve tried this mix but I don´t think it actually work for me ..

Sooo 2003. Nothing says, “I feel fat” like a dress over jeans. Even a too-billowy top is not acceptable. I don’t know where women get this idea that if they cover themselves in layers of fabric they’ll look thinner, when really it makes everyone look like frumperella.

Love dresses over jeans! Hannah’s “rules” are spot on. I once tried a dress it over white, straight-leg jeans and it was NOT good!

I don’t and I wouldn’t. I used to the last time it was trendy, but I’ll stick to leggings these days.

I do it all the time, but I follow the same rules that Hannah pointed out. It’s a nice casual look, I think. JLH is doing it wrong, though.

No. Never. The extra fabric at the hips (not to mention zippers, pockets, and other sorts of embellishments) make the dress fall funny thus making said person look like a whale.

i love it on other people, but not on myself. i’m too short and it makes me look even shorter. i don’t think jlh quite pulled it off, though… i can’t really put my finger on it. she would’ve looked way better without the jeans. maybe the dress/sandals are too cute to be combined with jeans.

I think the problem with Jennifer Love Hewitt’s ensemble is the colour of the jeans… they don’t work with the dress AT ALL!
Then again wearing, say, white jeans with this dress would have made her legs look too large, so I’m torn.
The dress also seems to be ill-fitting around the bodice, it’s almost too big…

been there, done that, it kinda helps if the dress if knee length or shorter, or stick with shirt-dresses

Sorry, but I really don’t like it!
I think the look only works with tunic-dresses, not fitted ones like this! It just looks silly to me!
