Iris Van Herpen X United Nude Biopiracy Boots, £1,245

Neither United Nude or Iris Van Herpen are known for producing “ordinary” designs, so it should come as no surprise that these boots are the result of a collaboration between the two.

Oh yeah: these are boots, by the way. Sorry, was that not clear from the photos? It’s MOST clear from the final shot, in which you can see what appears to be the back of a shoe, embedded in what appears to be part of Darth Vader. (Which would give us an excellent idea for a Halloween costume, actually, if it weren’t for the small fact that these cost £1,245 per pair.) That aside, though, these are definitely one of the more unusual pairs of shoes we’ve seen for sale (as opposed to the weird and wonderful creations we’re always coming across on Pinterest, and which almost always turn out to be art projects, as opposed to actual footwear).

These are certainly creative, imaginative, and a wonderful feat of design: we’ll give them that. The important point to remember here, though, is that they’re not supposed to be works of art (or not JUST works of art, anyway…). No, they’re supposed to be shoes, and shoes are supposed to be worn, which makes us wonder what, exactly, they’d look like on a foot? Well…

From the front, they’re actually slightly LESS strange looking than we’d have expected. From the back or side, however, it’s a different story:

Oh, and they’re also available in beige. Awesome.

These are currently available to pre-order at United Nude, for the aforementioned £1,245. It’s quite an investment for a single pair of boots, but do you think these are worth investing in? Are they fabulously inventive, wearable works or art… or are they simply crimes of fashion?

I was looking at these shoes yesterday and first seeing them just as the product photo (not being worn) I couldn’t even figure out where the foot goes and how it is a shoe! Then after seeing them being worn I was like “ok…”. I quite like them from the front but the side view is not very flattering. I don’t know, I like United Nude and that they’re innovative but this pair of boots (are they boots?!) doesn’t appeal to me personally. I would however like to see someone wearing them!:)

I have problems finding boots because my calves are so wide. This would solve the issue, I suppose. And it would be easier to tuck my jeans inside…

I can see one improvement they could make. They could use headlights on the front because they look a little like car fenders.

I don’t think they’re offensively ugly, although the beige ones look a bit… off… and the open calf is strange. But in black they just look like cool boots for someone to wear on stage

What a fright they are! The model must be a former acrobate to be able to walk in them. Imagine how the “shaft” muste move and collide with your shins with every step you take.

Absolutely hideous! Who in their right mind would pay that kind of money for something so ugly?

Someone who has a different taste and style than you. Just because they are ugly to you, does not mean they are ugly. Your taste is just that, *your* taste. You are not the arbiter of taste for the rest of the world.

I assure you, we could look through your closet and find something we could ridicule you for, if we stooped to your infantile level.

And YOUR taste is just YOUR taste. Just because something is not ugly to you does not mean it’s not ugly. Do you see how that works? Or do you seriously think that you’re the only person in the world who is entitled to express an opinion on fashion? Because trying to bash someone just because they don’t share your taste seems pretty “infantile” to me.
