Iris Apfel wishes The Fashion Police were real

Fat people don't wear enough clothes says Iris ApfelIris Apfel, fashion icon, (left) seems to be a big fan of the idea of fashion-policing. Speaking to The Independent this week, the 90 year-old said:

“It seems that the fatter and uglier people are, the fewer clothes they wear. The shorts and flip-flops and tight jeans on butts that go from here to Poughkeepsie. I always say they should put people in jail for wearing clothes like that. Especially stretch jeans over size 10 — they should be outlawed. Ten years ago people were starting to look like slobs in New York, now it’s an epidemic.”

Iris, we’re doing our best to fight the good fight against bad fashion. No stretch jeans for anyone over size 10, though? We doubt our jail is big enough, even if we agreed with you!*

(*Which, for the avoidance of doubt, we don’t…)

Even though I agree with her general direction in this, she’s kinda harsh, no?

I think the Fashion Industry is incredibly biased toward the thin, and those of us with some curves (or even just a little bit of a stomach) are often left in the dust. Evidence of this is especially strong in the U.S., where the government has legalized weight-loss surgery for anyone with a weight/height Body Mass Index [BMI] of 26 or more (as calculated with American pounds… I’m not sure what the equivalent is in other countries).

The effects of this new policy are that I, who wears a size 10, am actually eligible for this surgery! I’m nowhere near what anyone would call “obese”, which is what the surgery was originally for.

26?? Really? That’s about what my BMI is, and I’m not obese at all. Also, I can wear tight jeans just fine, thank you.

LOL I totally understand what she means by no stretch over size 10. I’m a 12 and I really and truly do not take offense. But it’s not so much the size that matters as the actual shape/fitness of a particular person. Putting a size cap on spandex/stretchy stuff is just a general rule of thumb. Although a slimmer person can get away with wearing yoga pants on the street, it’s generally considered slobby to wear athletic or ill-fitted clothing as everyday clothing.

As much as I agree with her on the whole, she seems to take it just a little too far. I can’t agree with the no stretch jeans over a size 10 thing. I’m an hourglass-shaped size 14 and I rock my stretch skinny jeans like nobody’s business. In fact, almost all of my jeans are stretch skinnies for just that reason. It all depends on the person’s shape and how/where their body carries weight. But I agree that in general, the trend of people dressing inappropriately for their bodies/for going out in public has gone way too far. I understand dressing in the things you like rather than going by what others say you should wear….But it just seems like people don’t even care anymore.

As a size 14 lady wearing skinny burgundy jeans (and looking pretty damn good in them too) I have to disagree with her!

I am unable to take her comments seriously on account of her having seeing eye glasses from the $2 shop.

Clearly her authority as a fashion expert is derived from huge honking oversized glasses. If she was a -man-, a dame, and Australian, then I might buy into ‘her’ suggestions…

Given what she’s wearing, I think people who throw stones shouldn’t live in glass houses…

iris is american i think, so the size 10 she’s talking about must be american, or maybe i’m just wrong ,I’ve read the whole interview which is hilarious . At the end she concludes with something like that “It’s a democratic country ,if people are happy looking like a freak , so be it” .
