Fashion Trends for Fall 2010: Kilts

Clockwise, from centre: Pink Vivienne Westwood kilt; Christopher Kane buckled wool kilt; Comme des Garcons black pleated kilt; Burberry long wool skirt kilt;  Warehouse cut-about kilt; Burberry mini kilt; Burberry heart kilt;

The kilt is making a comeback this winter, apparently.

And just like that, it’s 1995 all over again, and we’re all dressing up like Cher in Clueless, in our little mini kilts and our knee socks! Well, OK, not quite: this season’s kilt isn’t quite as mini as Cher’s was (although as you can see from the image above, the mini kilt is still around). In fact, this season’s kilt comes in a range of different guises: some are short, some are long; some are plaid, some are plain; some are purple, some are bright pink – you get the picture. All, however, share that distinctive pleated detail that makes a kilt a kilt, and while most of the examples above come from designer brands, fear not, the high street won’t be far behind, and many of our favourite retailers are including kilts as part of their Autumn/Winter collections.

Round these parts, kilts are still an integral part of many a school uniform, so we struggle not to associate them with schoolgirls, or with those drunken relatives you always see at weddings (pretty much the only place you’ll see a real kilt worn in Scotland these days), but kilts do tend to come in and out of fashion, and if this winter is going to be one of those times when they’re back in, well, we’re going to need to know what you all think of them, so hit up the comments box and give us your thoughts!

Yay or Nay to kilts?

I’ve got a soft spot for kilts, although I can understand why they aren’t to everyone’s tastes. As a Cornish gal, I’d love to get one in Cornish tartan.

They can be cute with knee-high boots, I think.

I do enjoy plaid skirts! I have a few. The only pleated one is a super-short red skirt that was a normal sized miniskirt on me about 6 years ago and is now kind of a stripper schoolgirl outfit centerpiece. Oh dear.

I’m quite fond of tartan. I have a beautiful Westwood inspired dress and of course love anything trademark Vivienne Westwood tartan.

But I’m not sure I could handle an actual kilt though! Some of those kilts you put pictures of are kinda more skirts so I think they’re better.

I guess if you team it with a sporran and the socks your in trouble!

    😀

I find it difficult to wear them without looking like a hooker dressed as a sexy schoolgirl.

The skirt I just made is sort of kilt style (ish), but it’s definitely more Cher in Clueless length. I’ve always had a soft spot for kilt style skirts though, and I’m glad there’ll be more around.

i vote Nay unless it’s part of your school uniform. I much prefer a good classic (and more age-appropriate) plaid pencil skirt 🙂

Absolutely a yes with the normal rules of fashion applying. Pick a flattering length (knee-length) and not an obnoxious colour combination, put it with a pair of good leather knee-high boots or attractively styled shoes, and don’t go head to toe plaid.

Last time I wore a kilt I was ten! I’d at least try one on if it wasn’t in the same scratchy fabric…

There’s a company in Seattle, Washington called Utilikilts that makes unisex kilts with cargo pockets, kind of like the purple one up there.

I’m generally down with kilts, just as long as they’re not any kind of tartan. They look a bit too costumey. The plainer ones could be way more interesting and flattering. Indeed, the one on the right is strangely appealing.

pleated skirts are great ..but i don’t like pleats that are shorter than knee length for an adult. 12 year olds can get away with it but an older girl/woman looks like she’s trying to play catholic school girl or yeah maybe cher in clueless. the longer skirt with legs–that’s appropriate.

Must get one. It’s more librarian, less trashy school-aged tart.

pringle of scotland has an amazing grey tiered kilt with a sheepskin lining, and its so gorgeous. look at vogue for their take on heritage chic. I have recently made two tartan dresses one vivienne westwood style and the other is a sexy tailored shift. kilts on the runway looked great this season, but i dont think you picked the best ones to showcase just how great a trend they really are.
