Denim Skirts: What do you think of them?

Denimskirts

This week I’ve been reading Hadley Freeman’s excellent book, The Meaning of Sunglasses (which we’ll be reviewing next week sometime). In the book, Hadley makes the observation that, with a few notable exceptions, denim is really best kept for jeans. I think I’d have to agree, particularly in reference to these denim skirts, which are new in at Miss Selfridge this week.

A well-cut denim mini skirt I can just about handle, in certain situations, and on certain people. Denim skirts like these ones, though – well, for some reason they’re making me think of bleached blonde permed hair (with the roots showing) worn with neon coloured "scrunchies", huge fake nails, white frilly ankle socks and trainers. I have no idea why that’s the image that pops into my head when I look at these, but there you have it.

What do you think of denim skirts, then? And, more specifically, what do you think of these denim skirts? Would you wear them? And, if so, what would you wear them with? So many questions needing answers…

Well, I’m wearing a denim skirt right now, so obviously I like them, but I’m pretty picky about the shape of my denim skirts. I wouldn’t ever wear either one of those, which both look at a bad flashback to 1989. I like a denim pencil skirt, though, and my current denim skirt is A-line with an inverted pleat, and I think it looks fine.

I have one. It’s just-above-the-knee a-line with a low rise and an eyelet lace detailing sewn onto the bottom. It is my favorite. I feel an aversion to shorts, and this skirt sees me through the summers. It is cute. It is incredibly comfortable. It looks equally at home with a tank top in the summer or a turtleneck and boots in the winter. You will have to pry that skirt from my cold, dead hands.
That said, there are a *lot* of bad ones out there. Which makes the hunt for a good one, all the more fun!

I do not like *those* denim skirts! I own one that is a lot more simple (knee length and just slightly too wide to be considered “pencil,” no pleats or any other kind of embellishments) and I think it looks fine.

Oh yes yes yes! I totally agree, I don’t know why it is that I just can’t love a denim skirt. I have one which I didn’t ever wear, just because every time I wanted to put it on some feeling told me that in any other skirt I’d feel much more comfortable. Plus I just recently ordered a skirt that looked nice in the picture and when I got it, I realized that it was just very dark denim. Even though the details were very nice, I sent it back because I knew I’d just never wear it, no matter how often I’d try. So, apparently the answer is: No, I wouldn’t wear any denim skirt.

I own a few denim mini skirts, very simple, a little bit distressed and they are fantastic for the summer, very hot and very basic. I wear them to the beach, to the bars and just about everywhere else but work in the summer. However, I agree that far too many people think that because a skirt is denim that it is a free-for-all on style. Case and point in the about two skirts. There needs to be a line somewhere people!

I go to a school with a really strict dress code. I must wear skirts, and those skirts must be below the knee. Therefore I own a skirt that looks just like the first denim skirt. However, I only wear it to school in the winter when I want to wear my sweatpants and need a long skirt to hide them under. The second one, that’s far too eightiestastic for me.

I don’t think the long one is so bad, but it would depend on your shape. The ruffly one is just…yuck.

These ones are ugly. A good denim skirt can be really cute though.

I’m wearing a denim skirt right now, but it’s not like a skanky mini hooker skirt 😉 I think it’s pretty cute actually, and it was über cheap. >
