Crop Tops: they’re back. Will you be wearing one?

Crop-top

If ever there were two words almost guaranteed to strike fear into the hearts of women around the land, “crop” and “top” would be those words.

Let’s face it, the crop top just isn’t an item anyone can wear, is it? We’d argue that you don’t have to be skinny to wear skinny jeans, and you don’t even have to have the figure of supermodel to wear some of the “bodycon” dresses around at the moment, but you really DO need a belly you’re not ashamed to show in all its glory if you want to work the crop top.

(We’d also argue that you need a love of 80’s fashion that goes well beyond the odd pair of leggings, but that’s another issue altogether.)

This is a look that’s neither forgiving or particularly flattering to many figures, but we’ve spotted more than a few little midriff-baring tops in stores recently, so we’re thinking we’d better either get used to them, or hire some new recruits to help deal with the increased numbers of them we’ll presumably soon be seeing around.

What do you think, readers? Will you be welcoming crop top back to the fashion fold, or are they outright  crimes of fashion?

(The one shown above, by the way, is £14 from ASOS.)

So, readers, tell us:

I wasn’t going to comment because honestly, what more is there to say? Crop Tops never and WILL never be stylish or chic. And my arguement was “you’d never see Dita Von Teese in a crop top” unless it’s one of those awesome 50’s style crop tops seen on the likes of Grace Kelly and Ingrid Bergman that was fitted and worn with pants that hid a belly button. And I kinda dig those crop tops. I take issue with the 80’s t-shirt crop top a’la flashdance. So i’m not against the whole genre, just that era of it.

It’s weird, I really like crop tops. Not this from Topshop, but just with one color. I’ll be welcoming this, since I have a proud belly to show 😀

I actually think it would be cute if you wore a little plain cami underneath it.

I’m 22, and I’ll happily wear a bikini at a pool or beach, but I won’t ever wear crop tops. I’m from the southern US and the look seems to be synonymous with ‘trashy’ there. It always seems like the people who wear crop tops are the people who really shouldn’t.

Jilly – No it wouldn’t. A nice idea, but it is a crop top. It will nver be cute or retro-cool, or anything like that. Gokarm has it right.

YUCK. I hated crop-tops when they were in style, and I hate them now. Especially the loose t-shirt ones. Does anyone remember in the 90’s when they made shirts that weren’t really crop tops, but just barely hit the waistband of your pants? And then whenever you leaned over they’d ride up your back, giving you a harsh breeze? Those are even worse. 🙁

So not feeling the return of the late 90s crop top with the 80s colours to them. Yuck.

I don’t like them T-shirt style either, but if they’re tighter, I like them for layering 🙂 I’d never show my belly though ^^

I actually really like them, but i’d prefer to wear something underneath. They are really cute though. 🙂

    But i’m a petit 16 year old!
i’m excited to wear it and it honestly doesn’t bother me if anyone thinks im ‘trashy’ for thinking crop tops are adorable, people show their thighs and their boobs off so much, whats wrong with showing a little tummy!

Yep! especially when u’ve got beautiful body jewelry (pierced belly), and nice abs. 🙂 It depends on how you wear em. If you know how to make it classy and elegant then go for it, it’s all about the energy you give off. I love cropped — it can look so cute if you know how to dress yourself apropriately.. in a way that feels right to you, looks beautiful to you, and makes you happy – without “Trying” to be something else.

Agreed with @Celeste. Where I’m at, seems like only the really bulky girls are wearing crop tops, but I’ve gotten one now and I quite like it 🙂
