Style on Trial: Chloe Sevigny at the the 2nd Annual Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic, NYC

Spl103804_027[2]

The first picture we saw of Chloe Sevigny at the the 2nd Annual Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic event this weekend was the one on the right (above), and we'll be honest with you: at first we thought she was starring in some kind of British period drama and had turned up in costume, all ready to drink Pimms on the lawn.

Then we scrolled down and saw the pelmet skirt: a garment so short we can only hope she didn't drop anything on the ground and try picking it up while wearing it. At that point we realised that, nope, it wasn't a costume party, it's just Chloe being Chloe. Is this look working for her, though? Well, that's for you to decide. Place your vote in the poll you'll find below the jump and let us know if you think this outfit should be convicted or acquitted of committing crimes of fashion!

My first impression was that I loved it…but that’s more due to the sunshine and the yellow backdrop. Looking at the outfit on it’s own…mmmm…it needs something…more embroidery or something.

It’s rather blah, isn’t it? I mean, the pieces by themselves are nice but together it adds up to nothing much. And I can’t stand the way she always looks smug – like she thinks she’s pulling one over on us.

I like the hat, but the rest of it is a little too bland and the excessively short skirt does nothing to make it more exciting. The shoes and the hat are great, but they would have been better paired with a nice sundress.

    Oh poor dear,
It looks like she was walking along the racks in a hollywood costume barn & said:
“I’ll take this big shouldered tux jacket from the 80’s, pair it with this hooker skirt from the 90s, add this sad little blouse from the 70s, & ta da… I look like a washed out/tapioca talent show contestant. Oh, wait, I need a Minnie Pearl hat to reeeeallly pull it together!”
I feel bad for her as (obviously) there’s no one in her life that cares enough to keep her from being seen like that. Somebody, please send her a copy of “Pretty Woman”. That way, she can rock the -80s girl going to see a Polo match- look with some retro flair.
    Better luck next time Chloe!

I like the short skirt. She’s got nice legs. I like the whole outfit – it doesn’t need anything else, it would just come out tacky again.

I’d like it with a more fitted jacket. A jacket that droops lower than your skirt is a bad idea. Also I’m not a fan of the shoes, they’re not awful, but they could have been much better.

Two things… The shape of the jacket and the fact that it hangs just at, or slightly below the hem of the skirt makes her look like a whitish box with legs, and the paleness of the entire ensemble is doing nothing to grab my eye. If there was a splash of a more bold yellow or pale orange even it wouldn’t look quite so much like she had just been doused in baby powder.

She looks like a much older lady who accidentally put on high heels and got her skirt caught in a door. Like a mullet almost, in that she’s granny on top, party on bottom. It just doesn’t work.

I think she looks very good. Everything matches completely. It’s like the old times meeting the new fashion trends. The only thing missing is a sautoir. It would definitely make the whole outfit fancier.

i love it, but i’m biased towards the genius that is chloe (referring to both her and the brand of her clothing!) Oh and FYI those are shorts, not a skirt. Does that make it less trashy?

I just don’t get that woman….she’s just not attractive at all and I think she mostly looks like a bag of spanners. I mean, what’s with that hat…..and the unflattering orangy lipstick. She looks ill (and smug) to me….

The hat seems a step too far and I can’t help wishing something in that outfit was a different colour but I love the general shape and style. The short skirt is even working for me – any longer and it would look like Mary Poppins on a cruise.

The outfit looks great altogether, but my oh my, that skirt is an instant wardrobe malfunction. It should really be shorts, I think.
Are there any middle grounds between convicted and innocent?
    :/

Yeah, I agree with Gokarm…But I still really like it, even if the skirt is really short!

In Scotland we have the ‘Not Proven’ verdict,if that helps?
Well I think Chloe could have done without the jacket because it looks washed out and something you would find at the end of a car boot sale, reduced to 50p.
And also, the hat makes her look like Mary Poppins, the blouse and the shorts however are very nice and she could ahve got a jacket that was the same colour as the shorts.

If only the skirt was just above knee length it’d be a nice modern update of the faintly schoolmarmish look. Just a tad too short for the rest of the outfit.
