Star Bride Style Wars: Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson at the Bride Wars New York premiere

Spl71160_0131

Their movie is called "Bride Wars", so naturally The Fashion Police couldn't resist starting a Star Style War between Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway, particularly when the two actresses turned up wearing very different styles to the film's New York premiere last night.

Kate went the traditional red (or green, in this case) carpet route, in a dramatic black and white gown, while Anne kept it simple in a sharp black suit and gold heels. We think both women looked fabulous, but hey, it's a style war out there and there can only be one winner, so who do you think won this round: Kate or Anne? (Look under the jump for the poll!)

Courtney Love tries out the lace tights trend

Spl69191_0071

Once more we've opened up what we think of as our "Shooting Fish in a Barrel" files in order to bring you this image of Courtney Love, out in lace tights and what appears to be a fringed corset.

Of course, by Courtney's standards, this outfit is nothing out of the ordinary. We have a horrible suspicion, though, that the current "trend" for lace tights is going to be used by some people as a license to commit crimes of fashion, because after all, if you're already wearing leg wear that makes you look a little bit like you have some strange kind of skin disease, why, it's only a short step from there to wearing your lingerie in public, no?

We're keeping a close eye on the situation.

Style Stealer: Avril Lavigne's Ruthie Davis Mary Janes

Avril_lavigne_shoes

Avril Lavigne isn't a celebrity we'd normally bother stealing the style of, but we have to admit to being drawn to these Ruthie Davis Mary Janes, which she wore in US Weekly magazine recently. OK, we could possibly be doing without the gold studs on the stiletto heels, but something about this green and orange mix is really appealing to us.

What's not so appealing? The $875 price tag. Get them here.

Kate Bosworth in a baggy Topshop playsuit

Spl65463_0061

Finally! Finally we have the answer to yet another of our "who is buying all of the " questions! Today the perplexing fashion item in question is the baggy playsuit, and the answer to the "who is buying them?" question is: Kate Bosworth. She is buying them. Specifically, she is buying Topshop's grey bandau button playsuit, and you can too, for it is is £50 at Topshop.

Would you buy it, though? Tell us: has the sight of Kate wearing her playsuit to Nobu last night convinced you that there is merit in these items? Or are you just glad it's her, rather than you?

Geri Halliwell has a wardrobe malfunction

Spl64192_0011_2

Let this be a lesson to us all, folks: if your dress has sheer sections on it at all - AT ALL - then going commando is not an option. We repeat: IS NOT AN OPTION.

Unfortunately, it looks like Geri Halliwell missed that memo - and paid the price.  One more photo after the jump, to show you how the dress should look...

Red Carpet Fashion: Diane Kruger at the premier of 'Pour Elle'

Spl64681_0111

Wow, what a beautiful dress! What a beautiful... 50s wedding dress! And there's the rub: stark white dresses can look just a tad bridal, but we love the classic cut of this one, worn by Diane Kruger to the 'Pour Elle' premiere this weekend, and we love the way she's worn it with a pair of bright red shoes, too.  We still look like she's on her way to an (albeit stylish) 50s wedding, and that she could maybe stand to loose a couple of inches off the hem, but we're feeling generous today, so we still find ourselves liking it.

What do you think of this look on Diane?

Jodie Marsh goes clubbing in her tights

Spl64122_0011

Oh, Jodie. Look, we know lace tights are oh-so-very fashionable right now, and we hate to be the ones to break it to you, but Jodie? Sweetie? You're supposed to wear them under something else. Like a skirt, for example. Or a dress. You remember skirts and dresses, don't you, Jodie? Good. Let's see if you can't try wearing one every now and then...

Victoria Beckham in "same outfit twice" shocker

Spl63958_0012

OK, so it's not exactly the same outfit, because this dress is grey and the last one was black, but Victoria Beckham clearly likes this style a whole lot, because it's the second time she's been spotted wearing The Dress - the first time being at Heathrow Airport back in October.

Well, we don't blame her. We loved this dress the first time she wore it, in black, and we love this grey version, too, so it looks like we're going to have to get our detectives working round the clock to discover the identity of the designer. Unless, of course, any of our readers can help us out?

Criminal Fashion at The British Fashion Awards

Spl63288_0192

The British Fashion Awards. If ever there was a time when The Fashion Police could expect to be able to take the night off and sit back and relax, safe in the knowledge that the world was safe from crimes of fashion for one night at least, you'd think that would be it, no?

You would think wrong, though. Take a look under the jump to see what we had to deal with at last night's awards...

Sophia Bush shows off some serious toe cleavage

Spl54775_0441

Now, The Fashion Police quite like a little bit of toe cleavage in a shoe, with "little" being the operative word here. This amount of toe cleavage, as seen on Sophia Bush, though? This is just a bit weird.

Word on the web is that the shoes are by none other than Christian Louboutin. What do you think of them, readers? You'll find a close up of the toes in question under the jump, just in case you feel the need to interrogate them further...

Maggie Gyllenhaal: mumsy or marvellous?

Spl62907_0021

Ah, the mystery that is Maggie Gyllenhaal! If you're a fashion blogger, it's almost compulsory to worship at her style altar, but here's the thing: while we don't deny that Maggie's a great actress and good lookin' woman, The Fashion Police often think she dresses like someone in her 40s, who lives in a conservative small town, and maybe works in a school or something.  Her clothes frequently add around ten years to her age, and while this dress is pretty enough in itself, and certainly doesn't look bad on her, as far as red carpet looks go, we've seen better.

But that's just us, and we do seem to have something of a blind-spot when it comes to Maggie, so we ask you: is this look marvelous on her, or is it just a little bit mumsy?

Celebrity Style on Trial: Blake Lively's maxi dress

Spl62069_0171

Because of our Gossip Girl fixation, The Fashion Police feel obliged to like Blake Lively. And we do! We really do. We can't help but wonder, however, whether Blake may have taken the "cleavage OR legs" rule just a little too literally here. Sure, we appreciate the attempt to balance out the so-low-we're-waiting-for-a-nipple-slip nature of the top half of her dress with a longer bottom half, but ... did it have to be quite so low? Or quite so "90s peasant chic"?

We don't know. What we do know is that Serena wouldn't ever wear something like this, but then, perhaps that's the whole point here. What do you think, readers: a good look?

Celebrity Style on Trial: Hilary Duff at MTV's TRL "Total Finale Live"

Spl62003_0081_2

We see what Hillary Duff was trying to do here, of course. She's taken a short, low-cut dress and tried to give it an air of respectability by encasing it within a longer, higher-necked, albeit totally transparent dress. Or its designer has, anyway.

We'll give her a couple of points for effort (and because we like her hair), but ultimately we have to call "foul" on this one because...meh. Just pick and style and stick to it, Hilary! We can't be doing with this "neither one thing nor another" look, and we can't rightly say why. We think it may be something to do with the fact that, rather than making the super-short dress look slightly more demure, the transparent overlay only serves to draw attention to its super-shortness.

Oh, we don't know. And we loved her "Look! I'm going to the election" look a couple of weeks back, so maybe we're being too hard on Hil. What do you think, readers? Crime of fashion, or super-cute? Hilary shows us the back view under the jump...

Heidi Klum in minor "see-through dress" offense

Spl61938_0061

As far as the wearing of see-through dresses goes, this is only a minor offense. Indeed, at first glance, you may not even notice the fact that Heidi Klum here is wearing what appears to be a see-through skirt with a pair of giant knickers underneath.

Once you do notice it, though, it becomes pretty much all you can see, doesn't it?

On anyone else, a wardrobe malfunction that would leave you lying awake at night thinking, "Oh God, what was I thinking?" On Heidi Klum? Well, you decide...

Fashion Police Gold Star for... Kelly Osbourne at the Shaun White Snowboarding Video Game launch party

Spl59185_0121

Kelly Osbourne has come a long way in fashion terms over the years, and while some might describe this dress as "a tad boring", we're going to go with, "simple, chic, and looks fantastic on her". The fabric is actually covered in lots of tiny little hearts, and we think the cinched-in waist is flattering, while the puffy sleeves are... well, we just like puffy sleeves, what can we say? We can't help it.

Gold star for Kelly, in any case. Unless, of course, you disagree?

Mischa Barton's Adventures In Fashion: Bag Ladies Luncheon

Spl60137_0301

Now, before y'all go calling us big old meanies for referring to Mischa Barton here as a "Bag Lady", be reasured that the title of this post does not refer to Ms Barton herself, but to the fact that she actually was attending a Bag Ladies Luncheon - the Lupus LA's Sixth Annual Hollywood Bag Ladies Luncheon at the Beverly Wiltshore, as a matter of fact: a name that fairly trips of the tounge.

As it happens, Mischa did not turn up at this event looking even remotely like a bag lady, and that's because Mischa is all about the feathers right now. We think she looks drop-dead gorgeous from about the waist up here, and we particularly like the way she picked up the "I'm wearing a tree" theme of the skirt with the darling little leaf headband. It's from the waist down that she kinda lost us, mostly because although those are feathers on her skirt, from a distance they look almost exactly like the branches of the fir trees that grow around Fashion Police HQ. Hey, maybe Mischa could be the fairy on top of our tree this Christmas? We think she would like that.

Close-up of the adorable headband under the jump...

Mariah Carey: so that's who's been buying peep-toe ankle boots!

Spl59842_0091

Every time The Fashion Police see the phenomenon that is peep toe ankle boots, we find ourselves wondering, "Who would buy such things? And how would they wear them?" Today, though, we're pleased to say that the mystery has been solved: Mariah Carey would buy them. And she would wear them with leggings-worn-as-pants, a longline cardigan and, well, boobs. Case closed.

The boots in question are by Marni, and should you wish to steal Mariah's style, they can be purchased for £425 at Net-a-Porter.

Gwyneth Paltrow flashes her knickers in Antonio Berardi

Spl59751_0131

Now THAT'S what we call a "visible panty line!" And a visible bra line, too, come to think of it...

The Fashion Police have been fairly tolerant of Gwyneth Paltrow's recent adventures in fashion, mostly because we loved the shoes, and she looked like she was thoroughly enjoying herself, but when she showed up to the Two Lovers Paris premiere this week in see-through Antonio Berardi, we think she was possibly enjoying herself just a little bit too much, no? (We'd also call foul on the Rupert Sanderson boots here because, although we love them, they look like they're being worn with white ankle socks in this instance. But that's the least of our concerns with this outfit...)

This is exactly how Berardi sent this dress down the runway (with white undies underneath) so we don't think this was a mistake on Gwyneth/her stylist's part either - and in any case, it would be pretty hard not to notice that your white knickers were highly visible under your sheer dress, wouldn't it? No, we think she meant it, and while we appreciate the recent attempts at "edginess" on Gwynnie's part recently, we think it needs to stop here, before she starts veering off into "Agyness Deyn" territory. What about you?

Wardrobe Malfunction or Adorably Quirky? Joss Stone in odd shoes at the 2008 "Imagine There's No Hunger" campaign launch

Spl59919_0081

We're not sure who made these shoes (any ideas?), so we can't tell you whether they actually came like this, or whether Joss Stone here just bought two pairs and decided to mix it up a little. It's the kind of thing Joss just might do, but then again, it's the kind of thing some shoe designers we could mention just might do too, so we're going to hold off on labeling this one a "wardrobe malfunction", for now, at least.

Wardrobe malunction or deliberate decision, though, what do you think of Joss's look here? Does she look, as the Daily Mail commented, "like she got dressed in the dark", or is she just working her own, quirky style, and somehow pulling it off? The tie-dye cardigan is certainly in keeping with Joss's "hippy chick" style, and she's gone for a harlequin-style t-shirt dress underneath, which kinda reminds us of the nightwear of the 80s, although not necessarily in a bad way.

What's the verdict, Fashion Police jurors? You like?

Celebrity Style on Trial: Gemma Arterton at the James Bond: Quantum of Solace London premiere

Spl58497_0181

This dress is what we call a "crotch warmer": the front serves no other purpose other than to cover the crotch and no more, while the back flows out, preserving a small sense of modesty. It's the kind of dress you'd wear if you wanted something long and dramatic for a special event, but really, really couldn't stand the thought of not showing off your (admittedly great) legs.

Gemma Arterton seems pretty pleased with her choice here, but what do you think, Fashion Police jurors? Stunning, or an arrestable offense?

AnnaLynne McCord falls foul of "pants are not leggings" rule. Does she get away with it?

Spl58640_0021 Spl58640_0051_2

If you've watched any episode's of 90210 lately, you won't need The Fashion Police to tell you that AnnaLynne McCord's character, Naomi, has something of an ... interesting.... dress sense. And so, it would seem, does AnnaLynne herself. Here she is at the Blackberry Storm launch, totally flouting the "leggings are not pants" rule of fashion by... wearing leggings as pants. And then wiggling her ass in our faces just in case we didn't notice it.

Now, here's the thing: rules are meant to be broken, and we actually think there are some girls out there who can totally get away with the "leggings as pants". Yes, we do. What we want to know is: should we count AnnaLynne here among them?

What do you think of this look, readers? Does she deserve a Fashion Police warning, or, given that there are so many celebrities (and non-celebrities) dressing like this right now, should she get off scot-free?

Spl58640_0121

After seeing this photo of repeat fashion offender, Bai Ling, at the Blackberry Storm launch party this week, we were so blown away by the lack of flashed flesh, ripped clothing or other fashion misdemeanors that we've made the difficult decision to allow Bai out of the Fashion Police Jail and put her on parole. Because she actually looks cute here, doesn't she? This look is a whole world away from the kind of thing she usually torments our eyeballs with, and we think her efforts should be encouraged.

Bai's not completely off the hook yet, of course, but credit where it's due, no?

So naturally, The Fashion Police wondered: who was the best dressed - Holly Willoughby or Fearne Cotton?

We think we'd personally go with Fearne on this one: Holly looks great in her her floor-length gown, but we're liking Ferane's slightly more rock-chick look, and we're loving her hair! What do you think, though readers? Who wins the Star Style War between Holly and Fearne?

Unusually for the red carpet both Jaime King and Amy Adams decided to keep it sweet and summery at this week's 12th Annual Hollywood Film Festival Awards, opting for short, print dresses which look more suitable for summer than winter to us, although given that they were in California at the time, we guess the season's not so relevant.

Are these looks a refreshing change from the usual, floor-length, glitzy gowns, though, do you think? We like both dresses, although we don't think this is Amy's best look ever, but what do you think? Do you prefer this ever-so-slightly less formal look on the red carpet?

Sarah Jessica Parker's two-tone tights: a new trend?

Spl56875_0031

At first, we thought it was just some kind of shadow on the picture. But we checked all of the other photos in the set and nope, Sarah Jessica Parker really does appear to have two-toned legs, as if she pulled on a pair of cycling shorts over her tights. Closer inspection, however, leads us to believe that the tights themselves are designed to create just that effect, which is kind of a shame, because we love everything else about this look, but now all we can think about when we look at her is "cycling shorts over tights". Meh.

Celebrity Style on Trial: Paz Vega at Spike TV's Scream 2008 Awards

Dollface loved Paz Vega's makeup and hair when she wrote about her yesterday, but The Fashion Police aren't quite so convinced by the dress the Spanish actress wore to Spike TV's Scream 2008 Awards. We can kinda see where she was going with this: we think she was probably aiming for an old-school glamour, Dita von Teese-esque look, but we don't think Dita would wear something quite so 80s, so this falls a little bit short of the mark, ending up more "Retro Barbie" instead.

Or does it?

What do you think, readers? Should we convict or acquit Paz Vega of crimes against fashion?

Christina Aguilera gets a "new" look

Spl55342_0052

For the past few years now, Christina Aguilera has been working a kinda "silver screen glamour" look: she's been all red lips and platinum hair, and rarely has she strayed from her preferred colour palette of red, black, white and grey, with the occasional pair of blue jeans thrown in. The Fashion Police have applauded all of this, and not just because anything would've been better than those chaps she used to wear...

Lately, though, something has changed. It's like Christina suddenly got bored with classy (it can happen) and decided to get in touch with her inner rock chic. Her inner rock chic who we think is called  "Tracey", has a part-time job as a hairdresser and is a heavy smoker. We have no idea where we're getting that from, it just seems to be what Christina's "channeling" with this image. We don't necessarily mean that in a bad way, although we'd like to see her lose the lipstick...

What do you think of Christina's new look, readers? Is it a change for the better, or did you prefer the last incarnation?  There's one more picture  after the jump...

Celebrity Style on Trial: Mel B's pink hooded dress at the MOBO Awards 2008

Spl55667_0041

She's never been known for being particularly "safe" when it comes to fashion (remember all that animal print in her Spice Girls days?) but we're going to be honest here: when we first saw this picture of Mel B at last week's MOBO Awards, we though the dress was giving birth to her. Take a look at her head emerging from its pink, er, lips, and you'll maybe see what we mean...

We also thought a "less is more" policy on the boobs could've been a good thing, but hey, sometimes an "if ya got it, flaunt it" policy can work too, and there's no denying - Mel here has got it. And by "it" we mean "a figure The Fashion Police would kill for". And when we saw her actually presenting, and sans hood, this look seemed a whole lot better somehow.

Our question then, is this: is Mel B guilty of crimes against fashion here, or is this just an eye-catching and original dress which she looks great in? Only you can decide, readers, and you'll find one more picture under the jump to help you out...

Guess Who?

Spl56207_0181

Guess which celebrity was spotted out and about this weekend wearing Christian Louboutin's famous spiked stilettos? (The fact that these babies are 'price on enquiry' should give you a clue...)

*EDIT!* - The answer is now under the jump, if you care to take a look!

Fashion Police Gold Star for...Eva Mendes in yellow dress and over-the-knee boots at Heathrow Airport

Spl55626_0062

London's Heathrow Airport, like all airports, gets its fair share of fashion criminals in the shape of weary (and sometimes drunken) travellers heading off for a week in the sun, but it's had its fair share of fabulous too recently. Earlier this month it played host to a very chic Victoria Beckham, and now here's Eva Mendes, looking more like she's about to star in a Bond movie than spend hours sitting on a plane.

We love the sixties vibe of this bright yellow mini dress and boots ensemble, while the requisite dark glasses and designer handbag add a glam touch. Great look, but we somehow doubt it's what she wore to actually travel in.

What about you, readers: do you get all dressed up for the airport (and then switch into something a little more comfortable on the plane), or do you just go for comfort all the way when you're travelling?

Nights in white satin: Katie Holmes at the opening night of All My Sons

Spl56033_0041

Katie Holmes managed to get us all talking during rehearsals for her Broadway play All My Sons, by turning up each day in a seemingly endless collection of jeans, but if you thought the fashion show was over now the show has opened, think again. Here's Katie on opening night, with her usual Tom Cruise accessory and wearing ... well. It's a kind of 'genie suit' isn't it? One with cuffed pants and a black lace insert at the top.

So, just to confirm, that's white satin + black lace + cuffed pants + Tom Cruise. When we add that little lot up we get "not her greatest look" as our answer, but hey, we're cops, not mathematicians, so we're interested to hear what you think of this look on Katie Holmes. Should we let her off (after all, she's been looking pretty cute lately, it has to be said), or is this an arrestable offence?

One more picture of Katie and Tom after the jump to help you decide...

Madonna files for divorce, wears Chanel gun shoes and shress

Spl55137_006

The Fashion Police were sad to hear the news that Madonna and Guy Ritchie are to divorce after seven years of marriage. Sad tidings indeed, but it's good to see that Madonna clearly hasn't let the situation affect her flair for the dramatic - here she is earlier this week at the New York screening of 'Filth and Wisdom' (her directorial debut) wearing those Chanel gun heels we blogged about a few months ago and a shress. So it's situation normal, in terms of her wardrobe, at least.

Close-up of Madonna's feet after the jump, if you're interested...

Fashion Police Gold Star for... Victoria Beckham at Heathrow Airport

Victoria_beckham_heathrow

We know she has her critics out there in Fashion Land, but seriously, between the Audrey-Hepburn-esque crop, the chic little dress and the Chanel handbag, we think Victoria Beckham deserves a Gold Star for this outfit. And hey, this is totally what we'd wear to travel in if we had Vic's money. Well, OK, maybe not. But we do appreciate her ongoing efforts to make travelling glamorous again...

Lindsay Lohan discovers interesting alternative to ankle socks

Lindsay_lohan_tan

Whoops! Forget something there, Lindsay? Like maybe the fake tan for your feet? Or is this a new "skin ankle socks" look we're just not aware of?

Either way, we think Lindsay's actually looking pretty cute here, "ankle socks" aside. Whaddya think?

Victoria Beckham spotted in Antonio Berardi heel-less boots

Victoriabeckham_boots

We already knew Victoria Beckham was a fan of Antonio Nerardi's heel-free shoes, but here she is actually wearing them, and getting more attention for her choice of footwear than for the fragrance she was launching at the time.

Victoria wore the thigh-high PVC numbers to the launch of The Beckhams' 'Signature' fragrance in New York, pairing them with a thigh-skimming short grey dress. She appears to be managing to balance in them pretty well, although, of course, she's had plenty of practice walking in heels. What do you think of this look, though? Hit or miss?

Shress Spotting: Agyness Deyn in House of Holland, S/S 09

Agyness_deyn

You know how you sometimes look at fashions on the runway and think, "Well, that's all very creative and all, but clearly no one would ever wear it in real life?" Agyness Deyn just doesn't think like that, does she? Here she is wearing a sheer football-patterned dress (a "shress", if you will) from House of Holland's S/S 09 collection, and, in fairness, her face looks lovely here, doesn't it? She's all fresh and glowy and... oh. You totally weren't looking at her face, were you? Because her boobs are covered only by a pair of footballs. Yes.

Now, it strikes us that if Katie Price or Jodie Marsh, bless them, went out dressed like this, everyone would probably point and laugh and tut-tut about how very trashy and tacky they looked, but given that it's Agyness Deyn, and it's House of Holland, we're betting most of the fashion press at least will just call it "edgy" instead. What do you think, though, readers? Do a big set of boobs and a fake tan make that much of a difference, or is a trashy dress a trashy dress, no matter who wears it?
