Celebrity Style on Trial: Fearne Cotton’s florals-and-stripe combo

Spl99325_001[1]

Almost every time we feature a floral print dress here at The Fashion Police, there's a collective gasp of horror from the comments section, and someone accuses us of being "grannies". (We've had worse insults, of course, but just for the record, no, we're not. But thanks for asking.)

From this we've gathered that there's a general impression that floral=frumpy (which is unfortunate given how much of it there is around at the moment, and, indeed, every summer), so we're wondering what you'll all make of UK TV presenter Fearne Cotton's attempt to make florals a little more fun (not to mention appropriate to the British "summer" weather) by adding a stripe sweater underneath her floral print dress, and wearing it with black tights and flat, lace-up boots.

Fashion crime? A great way to bring the dreaded print up to date? Tell us in the comments…

I actually like this look! I could do without the boots, but the stripes with the florals is actually a surprisingly good combination!

My daughter dresses like this and she looks great. She’s 4.

I love the dress, but don’t like it with the rest of the outfit!

I actually don’t mind this look, although it’s not my favourite combination in the world.

It’s not that bad, really. Not sure the nail polish is quite right, but the rest seems good to me.

Ehm…I’m not a fan of that type of layering. Spaghetti straps over a real shirt. Girls used to do that quite a few years back and I didn’t like it then. But I love the boots and the floral mix. I just wish the stripes were more part of the dress…or a cute little striped jacket would look amazing. This just doesn’t do it for me.

To me, this looks like how I chose my outfits when I was three, i.e.”I like my flowery dress, and I like my stripy shirt, so why should I have to choose? I’ll wear both!”
Also, I am a firm believer in the “warmer clothes on top of cooler clothes, and not vice versa” rule.
    This just looks wrong.

Stripey top under a plain dress, or plain top under a floral dress – either of those would look great. For me, the stripes with the floral print just doesnt quite work.

I think this is a really cute look actually. If you don’t have the right attitude (confident and quirky), you’ll probably wind up looking like a less-than-hot mess. But I love it, I want to try something like it out.

Ugh. A plain white shirt might have worked, or better, a bolero sweater over the dress, but the stripes and floral just don’t mix.

I don’t really like this particular example, but it would have been super cute if she’d worn a plain top underneath.
    Love the dress.
I don’t consider florals frumpy at all!

    Eww.
That dress is so cute but that top makes her look like a mime. And the boots look like she stole them from a zombie.
This is a seriously bad combination. I wish she would surrender the poor dress to someone else who would appreciate it.

If the top were black, it would be a nice outfit.

I’m a big fan of florals! I didn’t even know there was a question as to whether or not it was fashionable. Anyhow, I think this looks okay. In general, I don’t really like dresses over shirts, but I don’t really have a problem with this one. 🙂
