Case Closed: Alexa Chung wears YSL’s slashed bermuda shorts

Remember those $1,000 YSL Bermuda shorts we cautioned earlier this month? This is the leather version, as worn by Alexa Chung, who has allowed us to answer the question “Who on earth would wear these?” and to close the case on this mystery.

They’re a little less confusing now we see them being worn, but still, rather Alexa’s bank account (Or YSL’s, as the case may be – this was a party to launch the label’s new fragrance, so the shorts may well have been a freebie) than ours, we say.

What do you think of this look?

Oh christ, this woman. I mean disregarding the shorts, when did that horrible grey/white weave-y fabric become fashionable, when did that combined with droopy white cardigans become fashionable, and HOW DID THIS PERSON BECOME IMPORTANT IN THE FASHION WORLD? Even her hair and makeup look awful, she just looks like she came home from the gym, swapped her track pants for wacky YSL leather shorts and hit the town.

That is NOT what effortless elegance is.

Except for the leather shorts, she looks like my softball-mom cousin. Seriously. Not a fashionable look.

I really don’t see why Alexa Chung is so highly regarded in the fashion world, she dresses like a sloppy teenager.

I like the shorts, and I actually like her outfit.
But I kind of agree with people asking why is she considered a “fashion icon”? I don’t think her style is very elegant, she always looks awkward, not effortless; and I don’t think her style is especially unique, I don’t think that’s a bad thing, but still, what’s so special about her?

MAYBE if those were distressed denim shorts the outfit would work… But no.
