Closet Challenge

OK, folks, time to ‘fess up: hands up if you have a few too many clothes? Uh-uh. Quite a few of you, we’re guessing. And how many of you find that even although you have too many/more than enough things to wear, you still find yourselves standing in front of your wardrobe of a morning, scratching your head and hoping some new and amazing item, which you’d completely forgotten buying, will miraculously materialise there? (And it never does, does it? IT NEVER DOES.)

Let’s face it, if you’re reading a site about fashion, chances are, you probably like clothes, and you probably enjoy the odd spot of shopping. And if you’re anything like us, you’ll sometimes buy things which you absolutely must have right now… and then hang them up in your overcrowded closet, where they will never be seen again.

(If you’re not like that, by the way, you can stop reading now: this post isn’t for you. Here, have you seen the urinal dress yet?)

Well, it’s time to cut that out, you hear us? And to help you, our sister site,, is running a year long Closet Challenge, which you can read about here.

For those of you who couldn’t be bothered clicking on that link, the idea is similar to Shoeperwoman’s Shoe Challenge, which some of you may be familiar with: basically, you have one year in which to wear everything in your closet. Anything you haven’t worn by the end of the year, you lose, either by donating it, selling it, or throwing it away if it’s past its best. So, use it or lose it, in other words.

This challenge is a little less formal than the Shoe Challenge. You don’t have to count all of your clothes at the start, for instance, because seriously, who has time for that? By the end of it, however, it should (hopefully) have taught you to:

  • Identify your own style, eliminating the styles which don’t really suit you or your lifestyle, and getting maximum use out of the ones you do.
  • Become a more creative dresser:  when you know you have to either wear that item you love, but have never used, or send it to the charity store, you’re going to have to come up with some creative outfit ideas, which you may never have tried before.
  • Be a more thoughtful shopper: do you REALLY need that new item, when you still have all of those unworn ones hanging in your closet?

Best of all, you don’t have to do it on your own, because Shoeperwoman has a whole community full of people, all taking the same challenge, and logging their progress in the dedicated Closet Challenge forum. Want to join them? Click here to visit Shoeperwoman and sign up!

I found a great tip the other day if you’re doing something like this. Take out all your clothes hangers and put them back in the closet facing backwards. When you take out the clothes that you’re going to wear, put the hanger back in in the other direction. By the end of the year, the clothes that you’ve never worn will be on the hangers facing back and the clothes you do wear will be on hangers facing front.
    Did that make sense?
