Bootcut leggings, courtesy of Alexander Wang: the next big thing?

We know many of our readers are getting very, very tired of the whole skinny jeans/leggings look that’s dominated the fashion world for the last few years now. We can’t say we’re totally with you on that, because you’ll be prising our skinny jeans off our cold, dead legs, but hey, a change is as good as a rest, and we fully support the idea of having lots of different choices when it comes to legwear, rather than the current “all skinny, all the time” situation.

Most of the people who’ve been crying out for a change of cut seem to favour the bootleg jean/pant, and we can see why: it’s a pretty flattering shape, and it can be smart or casual as required which is always a good thing.

Well, bootleg lovers, we have good news and bad news for you. The bad news is that leggings aren’t going anywhere. Nuh-uh. They’re here to stay for the foreseeable, and it’s likely that people will be continuing to wear them as pants, despite the best efforts of The Fashion Police to put a stop to this practice.

The good news, however, is that there is a compromise on the table. It is… THE BOOTLEG LEGGING!

Yes, these are leggings. But they’re ALSO bootcut! That makes everything OK, doesn’t it? It’s fine to flaunt your camel toe, as long as your ankles are hidden, after all!

On a serious note, we’re wondering what everyone thinks of this new twist on the humble legging. It doesn’t actually make leggings any more modest, as you can see, so it’s basically just a slightly different ankle shape: not that that’s stopped Alexander Wang charging $295 for them, of course.

Would you buy them? Would you wear them? Are they better or worse than regular leggings, or just not different enough?

This is just another excuse for wearing leggings as pants… Not good.

Bootleggings… Completely unacceptable! If you want bootlegs, wear em with heavier fabric; if you want leggings, just embrace your leggings!

I’m going to say worse because this is like saying leggings ARE pants. Which they are not. Ever.

On a brighter note, after months of trying on jeans, I’ve finally found my perfect pair – dark blue, bootcut and a perfect fit! (Jeans that fit properly are my holy grail.)

I would absolutely buy these, but would only wear them with long sweaters and/or for weekends. Maybe for days I’m just catching up on housework. They seem to me like yoga pants, which aren’t meant for dressing up, but definitely serve a functional purpose.

I don’t know. To me they just seem too long. They’re nothing out of the ordinary in any other respect. But this long wide foot part renders them useless for me, as I wear leggings mostly instead of tights with short skirts and high boots, and in that style the wide leg would look stupid.

Leggings are not clothing. Jeggings are not clothes. I’ve seen far too many people wearing them already and I am aghast!

I actually don’t hate them. I agree with Karen above, that they would be good weekend casual wear. I have NEVER worn leggings as pants, I can’t even stand it when people wear them with long shirts- only dresses and skirts for me. But….. THESE leggings I think you could get away with wearing under a long shirt, provided that shirt covers your butt and camel toe region.

ASOS do flared jeggings, i thought the point of jeggings was for them to be tight?
I really don’t get some fashions!

The other day I was going to wear a short dress / tunic top with leggings, but decided the combination looked unflattering and switched to straight cut jeans. I’m going to go as far as saying that when these are available in the High St, I will probably buy a pair!

i like them in the first pic but not so much in the second. i wouldn’t wear denims that fell like the leggings appear to in the second pic, though. i don’t know, i guess i would try them on, but i fear that as a short, short girl i would only find ones that looked extra, extra long.
