Anya Hindmarch’s cereal packet and laundry detergent clutch bags

“Wait a minute,” you’re probably thinking. Why are The Fashion Police showing me photos of cereal packets? This isn’t a breakfast blog! This isn’t what I signed up for! Where are the fashion crimes?”

Guys, you’re looking at them. Or not, depending on your point of view. These, you see, are no cereal packets. They’re clutch bags – and expensive ones, too – which are just designed to LOOK like cereal packets. So, basically, for the price of just £995, you can look like you’re walking around carrying a box of Corn Flakes. OR… and bear with us here… for the price of an ACTUAL box of Corn Flakes, you really CAN walk around carrying a box of Corn Flakes. You wouldn’t, though, would you? Because that would be silly. Important question coming up: why would it be silly to carry a box of Corn Flakes around with you, but totally cool and fashion-forward to spend almost £1,000 in order to create exactly the same effect? Questions like this are the reason The Fashion Police exist…

Don’t have a spare £1,000 burning a hole in your pocket? Just not a big fan of Frosties? That’s OK: how about one of these, instead?

Also by Anya Hindmarch, these bags have the benefit of being both a little cheaper (£595, as opposed to £995), and a little less literal, so there’ll be much less chance of people think you’re actually wandering around clutching a box of Daz? Does this make them better or worse, we wonder? More of a fashion crime, or less of a fashion crime? Are they, for that matter, a fashion crime AT ALL? Would you buy one of these clutch bags, readers? And if so, how much would you be willing to pay for them?

I have tried to think of a reason for these. Maybe if you had a lot of money and wanted to look like “just folks”, you would carry this—but I am “just folks” and I don’t carry cereal or detergent with me anywhere—so fail! Or, designers are having their upscale patrons “on”? It can’t be “edgy”–Tony the Tiger and laundry are not edgy—so fail! I think I am tending toward a designer laugh at the expense of the “Oh but it’s DESIGNER” people. Please lock these up and throw away the key.

Sharon, I always think designers are having us on. It is a contest to see who can get people to wear the most impractical, weirdest possible thing.

That said, I have a clutch made from the Chicago Manual of Style, bought to carry at my graduation when I received my PhD. My only defense is it cost way less than these clutches, and it looks like a purse, not some random book I am carrying on a chain.

Liz–I have seen the bags like yours, and I rather like them. I can see that, and other “fun” pieces–but I draw the line at Tony and Laundry! LOL

Do you remember those ads where women carried their fabric softener and showed it off to their amazed neighbors/dinner partners/fellow opera goers? Well I bet there are plenty of desperate people out there just burning to be able to do the same. The designers just extended a helping hand.

I wouldn’t. One thing is to upcycle some old package into a clutch (though I don’t like that too much, either), but this? It shows the wearer to have more money than discrimination, I’d say. (Or more credit card debt …)

The fact that the cereal clutches are made from snakeskin makes me especially sad!

I didn’t notice that, but yes, it makes them extra cynical.

Literal cereal box and laundry detergent imitating clutches are pretty weird.

But I absolutely adore the logos; I feel they would nicer on clutches that actually look like clutches!
(Maybe with embellished touches on the logos? Haha)

    It could work!

I find these fun but I don’t know where I might bring this. Cereal lovers convention? This was probably a cute concept but I could buy cereal instead for $1085 cheaper.

I thought they were kind of cool until I saw the price. 600 QUID for a cereal box? No. Absolutely not.
