Apple bottom jeans, you say? What are they?
Designed by rap artist Nelly, Apple Bottoms do exactly what the name suggests: they create the appearance of a pert, plum butt. Don’t worry, they don’t do this using butt bras, padding or anything like that. No, it’s all about the cut – and specifically, about the shape and design of the pockets.
Exhibit A, the basic Apple Bottom jean. Nice, aren’t they? Note the apple design on the pockets: now, as jean aficionados will know, those pockets are crucial when it comes to making your butt look good. This is something other jean manufactures, like Earl and Seven for All Mankind have also figured out: if you make the back pockets smaller than they used to be on older styles, and angle them just right, you’ll create a far more flattering look.
Other styles of Apple Bottom jeans
As well as the classic cut shown above, Apple Bottoms are also available in a variety of different styles, such as the Script AB jean, which ditches the apple logos, using the first letters of the company name on the pockets instead:
As with all Apple Bottom jean styles, though, the eye is drawn instantly to those back pockets – and, of course, to what’s underneath them. Which is the whole point, obviously. You’ll also find skinny and cropped styles of denim, in a variety of different washes, some of which are more attractive than others.
The brand also sells dresses, pants, skirts, tops and outerwear via the Apple Bottom Jeans website and stores.
Apple Bottom Jeans are name-checked in “Overnight Celebrity” by Twista, and by Flo Rida in ‘Low’. They’re also one of Oprah’s favourite things – now there’s a distinction for you…
