Five Quick Eye Makeup Tips

The Fashion Police may be best known for our fashion crime-fighting advice, but, for many people, makeup and beauty is a big part of looking stylish and feeling polished, so, in the first of an occasional series, here are some quick eye makeup tips to help you make the most of your existing makeup routine…and make the most of your eyes.

TFP Eye Makeup Tips # 1 | Curl your eyelashes

Curling your eyelashes helps open up the eyes, making them look bigger and more “awake”. It also makes your lashes look longer, which is no bad thing. Eyelash curlers may look a little daunting, but a bit of practice is all it takes, and once you get used to using one, you’ll wonder what took you so long. Our top tip: heat your eyelash curler with a quick blast from a hairdryer before using it – it’ll make the curl last longer and look better. Just be careful not to get it too hot, or you’ll burn yourself!

TFP Eye Makeup Tips # 2 | Heat up your eyelash curlers

TFP Eye Makeup Tips # 3 |Dust translucent powder onto your lashes

It’ll look a little odd at first, but a quick dusting of translucent powder on the lashes before applying mascara will make your lashes look thicker and longer once your mascara is in place: an instant “false lashes” effect without the need for ACTUAL false lashes.

TFP Eye Makeup Rips # 4 | Use waterproof mascara

Most people assume waterproof mascara is only good for people who swim, sweat, or spend a lot of time in the rain. Not so: waterproof formulas are much more effective at holding a curl, so if you’ve already used tip number 1, follow up with a waterproof mascara, and watch those curly lashes stay in place all day. If you’re looking for a good waterproof mascara, we recommend Lancome Hypnose Drama Waterproof (high end) or Maybelline Illegal Length Waterproof Mascara (budget).

TFP Eye Makeup Tips # 5 | “Tightline” your eyes

For those unfamiliar with the term “tightlining” is a makeup technique in which you line the waterline of your lashes with eyeliner. Again, this is a technique that can take a bit of getting used to (there’s a tutorial here), but once you’ve learned how to do it, it can make a huge difference to your makeup and eyes. Tightlining the upper lashes is far more subtle than regular eyeliner (done right, it shouldn’t actually look like you’re wearing eyeliner at all), but it really helps to define the eye, and creates a very polished look when used with mascara.
