Review | La Redoute X Courrèges A-Line Dress

La Redoute x Courreges 60s a-line dress

We were really impressed by the look of the recent La Redoute X Courrèges line so when a 30% off discount code dropped into our inbox last week (Use code 8245), we decided now would be a good time to put that iconic 60s-style mini dress to the test. Here’s how we got on:

I loved this dress from the moment I laid eyes on it: it’s an iconic, Courreges design, in that classic 60s shape, with a high neck and A-line shape. It’s totally different from my usual style, but I decided to take the plunge anyway, and ordered it in white (it’s also available in black, hot pink and grey). Well, if you’re going to dress like you’re in a 60s sci-fi movie, you may as well do it right, no?

When I placed the order, I really wasn’t sure what to expect. It was hard to get an idea of what the fabric was like from the La Redoute product shots, so I opened the package with some trepidation. I needn’t have worried, though: this is seriously one of the best quality items I’ve ever found from a high street/catalogue brand. The dress is made from a very thick, stretchy ponte fabric: it’s fully lined, and the workmanship is everything you’d expect from a high-end brand. There’s a concealed zip at the back, and a huge amount of attention to detail: I really couldn’t find fault with the construction or workmanship if I tried.

As for the fit: I ordered my usual size, and although I normally find that La Redoute runs large (sometimes ridiculously so), but I was pleased to find that wasn’t the case here. The fit is loose, and is designed to be so, and that will take a bit of getting used to for me, because I usually favour more fitted styles, but in general I would say this is true to size. The length, meanwhile, is reasonably short, but not indecently so: I’m just under 5″4, and it hits a few inches above the knee, but definitely passes the fingertip test:

So far, so good, then. The real problem with this dress, however, will be actually wearing it, because let’s face it, it’s the kind of dress that could look very costumey if you’re not careful. The black or grey versions would be much easier to wear, but white dresses always stand out, and this one, although simple enough, does have that 60s sci-fi vibe I mentioned above, and I anticipate feeling a little conspicuous in it at first.

Overall, however, this is an amazing dress , which I wouldn’t have guessed came from La Redoute: if you’ve ever fancied owning a pieve of classic Courrèges I’d say this comes pretty close.
