Closet Heroes: Skinny black pants

Thanks to all of your suggestions on our first Closet Heroes post, we now have a growing list of awesome items to feature. We’ll be doing our best to work our way through as many “hero” items as we can, but today we’re focusing on a suggestion from Fashion Police reader Spiky, which we just so happen to wholeheartedly agree with: skinny black pants.

Spiky said: “I work in an office environment, and for me it’s my skinny black pants. I get the Really Skinny trousers from Gap.”

It’s definitely true that these trousers can be indispensable for those who have a formal or semi-formal working environment, and need to look smart every day, but skinny black pants can be adapted to just about any situation: wear them cropped to the ankle with black ballet flats for a classic Audrey Hpeburn-esque feel, dressed up to the nines with heels and a silk cami, or make them look a little more edgy with some funkier footwear and accessories. Oh, and they don’t necessarily HAVE to be black, either: it does make a good base colour, but you’ll get the same classic feel from shades like navy or forest green, and a more summery effect from soft pastels or white.

We are, however, talking about BLACK pants here, though, so we’re going to show you some of our personal favourites and then ask you to share yours. Starting off with…
1. J Crew ‘Minnie’ pants in stretch twill, £77.80J Crew minnie pantsThese aren’t the cheapest black pants you’ll find, but we think they’re worth the investment, and, having first discovered them a couple of years ago, we find it hard to go past them, and live in fear of them ever being discontinued. These are cut slim in the leg, and are designed to hit just above the ankle, which is our preferred length for this style of trouser. The stretch twill is comfortable and hard wearing, and doesn’t lose its shape, so these look just as good after a few hours’ wear, or a handful of washes, as they did to start with. They’re released in a variety of different colours every season, and honestly, we’d buy them in every single shade if we could. Then we’d buy doublers, just to make sure we never ran out.If you’re looking for something a little more budget friendly, however, we also recommend:

H&M slim fit trousers, £9.99

slim black pants

At £9.99 per pair, these are better quality than you might expect: they have a nice, skinny leg, a medium rise (perfect for those of you who hate low-rise pants), and a little bit of stretch. The leg is cut longer than the J Crew pants, so you may need to hem it if you’re short, but it can be easily tucked under, allowing you to adapt the length to heels or flats. These are a cotton mix, so they’re less comfortable/durable than the Minnies (and, like most black pants, they’re complete lint monsters…) but they also come in a wide range of colours and prints, so if you like the shape, you can go to town with it for not too much money.

3. Gap ‘Really Skinny’ pants, $59.95

It’s been a while since we last tried these personally, but Spiky’s comment reminded us of them, and they’re another good, reasonably-priced pair of black pants which come in a range of different inseams: this alone gets them the thumbs up from us!

So, those are our personal recommendations, but we’d love to hear yours, too. Tell us:

Do you consider skinny black pants to be a Closet Hero? If so, which ones do you wear?

[yo_quote author=""]A closet hero is an item of clothing which, once purchased, quickly becomes indispensable to its owner. Here at TFP, we don’t believe that there are particular items which “every woman” should own: we’re all too different to need or want exactly the same clothes. We do, however, believe that most people have their own closet heroes, and in this regular column, we’ll be sharing some of ours: and hopefully some of yours, too….[/yo_quote]

I sure love skinny pants but I dare say its not particularly nice for women on the big side. I am big and most times skinny pants makes me look even fatter especially around the thighs.

    they are a wardrobe staple.
but you have to be careful, because sometimes the cut just isn’t right and they make you look a couple sizes bigger.
