Ten fashion trends we hate right now…

shocked retro woman discussing fashion trends we hate

… and by “we”, we mean “you”. Last week we asked our Twitter friends which fashion trends they wish would roll over and die already. Here’s what they said:

1. Adult Onesies

Can we just pause for a minute to say how happy we are to know that it’s NOT JUST US who hates the adult onesies thing? We know they’re “so comfy!” (When you’re using the same argument people commonly use to defend Crocs, though, it’s probably not going to convince us…), and yes, they DO allow you to dress up like a fluffy-wuffy bunny wabbit, but we’re still pretty perplexed by their ongoing popularity.  People, you CAN be comfortable without dressing like a giant toddler. No, really, you can, we promise.

On the other hand, people tend to wear these in the privacy of their own home (Although not always, sadly: it’s not uncommon here at Fashion Police HQ to see a teenager wandering down the street wearing either a “PJs and Uggs” combo, or some kind of onesie…), so who are we to tell them not to? if you love adult onesies, you’ll find our ultimate roundup here.

While we’re on the subject:

2. PJs in public

It takes less than 2 minutes to quickly pull on some REAL clothes, so unless you have an ACTUAL emergency on your hands, we’re begging you: please don’t go out in public wearing the clothes you slept in last night.

3. Leggings

Some of our Twitter friends hated leggings worn as pants. Some hated leggings with bold patterns on them (is there another kind right now? Because sometimes we wonder…). Mostly we get the impression you all just hate leggings, period. We hear you. We actually like leggings when they’re one solid colour and not being worn as pants (as long as there’s some form of crotch-covering we’re good with them…), but they’re one of those items that are just SO EASY to get wrong. And people so often do, don’t they?

4. Wedge sneakers

This one came up more than once. Wedge sneakers, you are hearby banished: go back to the 90s, where you came from, and don’t let the door hit you on the way out…

5. “Pattern mixing”

There’s a reason why people who aren’t fashion bloggers or self-professed fashionistas don’t mix patterns, you know. It’s because it normally looks like ass. Sure, there are people out there who can do it, and do it well, and if you’re one of them, more power to you. We most often see this described as “challenging” (sometimes it’s even done as part of a challenge) and honestly, getting dressed in the morning shouldn’t really BE a challenge… should it?

6. Peplum

Now, as we mentioned recently, we’re fans of the peplum, which is a true friend to those of us who carry our weight on our stomachs and don’t necessarily want the world to know it. But this list is about what YOU hate, not (necessarily) what WE hate, and some of you hate peplums, so peplums are on the list.

7. Python print

It became the “trendy” animal skin of the season. We hated it. So did some of our Twitter friends. Did you?

8. Neon

We firmly believe that neon looks good on no one. You will probably never change our minds on this.

9. Bubble necklaces

Another Twitter suggestion. We don’t dislike bubble necklaces in themselves, but when you’ve been seeing them on every single outfit blog for months on end, well, it does get old…

10.  High-low hems

If you can use the word “mullet” to describe it, it’s probably a crime of fashion. Truth.

Which fashion trends do you hate right now?

One fashion trend that I especially hate is the skinny jean. They look okay when one someone slender with long legs and the fabric just barely skims the body. However, on most people, skinny jeans make their legs look like sausages.

Another is sheer anything. Again, done right, it looks nice. But most people don’t do it right. Black sheer lace top with a white bra underneath, anyone?

Looking at those two “paragraphs”, I just realized that my most hated fashion trend is the “showing your goods” trend. People, we don’t need to see everything God gave you! Except in the bedroom. And in that case you shouldn’t be wearing that type of clothing outside of said bedroom anyway

I am really hating how overalls are making a comeback! Except I don’t know where they are coming back from since there are only three reasons to wear them ever:

    1. You’re a farmer
    2. You’re homeless (men’s overalls have plenty of pockets)
    3. You’re too young to be in kindergarten

If you meet none of these criteria, you don’t need to wear overalls. I also hate the selling of already destroyed clothing. I am talking to you, Free People.

Naked legs outside of summer. At style.com you see fall clothes now, naturally, and again – the models walk with wooly, furry or otherwise wintery coats and – bare legs! When will this be over? Bare legs with heavy clothes never look good no matter how much spray tan and milking grease you put on. I have seen this look in the London subway some years ago: Worsted skirt suit in black – black briefcase – black shoes – and visibly cold, white legs with scaly knees. I hate all these stylings which make you think the woman’s legs are in the caribbean while the upper body is headed to Novosibirsk.

I can’t stress enough how I agree with you!! An over-layered top part (shirt, sweater, vest, coat, oversized scarf…) looks ridiculous when put on a stick-like pale white bottom (aka bare legs)!
My only hope is that the opposite will never occur – imagine a fur coat and a beanie on a beach in July!

In a way, it does – big, comfy Uggs in summer with an outfit that clearly wants sandals. Probably no socks. I hate to imagine how sweaty the Uggs will become.

I hate to white-knight for Uggs because they’re obviously hideous, but they’re actually designed to keep your feet warm in winter and cool in summer: they’re supposed to be worn without socks and the point is that they *don’t* make the feet sweat. Doesn’t stop them looking terrible, obviously, but they were designed to be worn by surfers, so although it looks strange, it’s actually less weird than it seems for people to wear them in summer. That said, I’m fairly sure most of the people you see wearing them in warm weather are doing it because they think it looks good, not because they care about how cool their feet will be…

Agree with almost everything, except the high-low hems and peplums, I kinda like ‘em.

About the leggins I have to say: if you wanna know hell, come to Mexico, people LOVE leggins as pants.

Those pants with the flappy crotches. Nobody looks good in them and they only look remotely funky-trendy on a slender eighteen-year-old art student. For everyone else, I think the best definition of the things is what they are called in my mother-in-law’s Northern Italian dialect of Friulian: ciapamerda. AKA sh–catchers.

I might be getting crotchety and old but I dislike those little dresses that have the sides cut out. They are so juvenile! and I don’t think they look good on anyone over size 0. Also to add to the list is the “aztec print” … outside of traditional items and goods, this print gets quite annoying.

I don’t like too skinny jeans on guys.

    Drop-crotch pants. Just no.

I cringe when I see people-guys in particular trying the rolled up trousers look but make the roll wrong and use the wrong style of trousers. You need a better fitted pant, not grand dad jeans…also the perfect roll up..it should look a little haphazard-not so perfect school boy look. Also so over vintage and that horrid smell that follows it. I’m not sure why people go out of their way to look worse.

and, please stop wearing high-waisted anything espcially shorts that make you look like your “diapers” need a change. And, totally agree with bib overalls awful. Just get in shape and show off.

Ugh, enough with the peplum tops! And please explain to me why every single pair of women’s shoes has to be 6″+ heels with platforms. If you’re short, just deal with it, but I have no interest in breaking an ankle just to tower over everyone, for that matter, I have no interest in towering over anyone.
